The Wharton Tigers sent six swimmers to compete in the District 27-5A Swimming and Diving Meet in Victoria Friday, Jan. 22, but only one advanced to regionals.

Lady Tigers junior Ashley Guajardo had two top-four finishes and will represent Wharton at the regional swim meet at Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio this month.

Guajardo placed in both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle.

In the 200-yard freestyle, she had a time of 2:27.01 to finish in third place.  She had a time of 6:48.69 in the 500-yard freestyle, for fourth place. Guajardo was five-tenths of a second away from taking third place.

In a team category, the Lady Tigers competed in the 200-yard freestyle, but fell six seconds short advancing to regionals in San Antonio. 

Wharton’s Madeline Wind, Kelsey Rodriguez, Taylor Brune, and Guajardo came in fifth place with a time of 2:20.77. They came behind a Victoria East team, which finished with a time of 2:14.70.

The WHS boys’ team finished with 0 points. The girls’ team scored 23 points, good enough to take fifth place out of 12 teams.
