Wharton Babe Ruth’s 14U All-Star team won the South Texas state championship following competition on Sunday, June 30.
The tournament was held in Lake Jackson with Southern Brazoria County Babe Ruth as the host. Wharton was 4-1 in the tournament with its only loss coming against a Del Rio team. In the tournament Wharton’s bats were hot and the defense was solid.
Wharton outscored opponents 55-13.
Wharton’s Colten Frayard collected the opening game win as well as the championship game win on the pitcher’s mound. Other winning pitchers were Korbyn Rivera and Ryan Mendiola.
Mendiola threw a no hitter.
Players on this year’s championship team include players from Wharton, Boling, East Bernard, Edna, Brazos, and El Campo. Wharton’s next stop will be in Eagle Pass where the players will compete in the South West Regional Tournament, which begins July 18.
The last Wharton Babe Ruth team to win state was also a 14u team, and the championship also happened in Lake Jackson. That win occurred seven years ago, and more interesting is the fact that Roy Mendiola, who is the manager of the 2012 state champs is also the manager of this year’s team.
The 2019 South Texas State championship tournament MVP was Ryan Mendiola, who was the bat boy for the 2012 team.
