The Wharton Youth Soccer Association (WYSA) is kicking off its 2019 fall season with registration and a mini camp. The WYSA is also announcing a partnership with the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash, professional teams for men and women.
“This year we want to get a jump start on the season, and make sure parents don’t miss our summer registrations,” said WYSA Board Treasurer Kristi Kocian. “We hope this event inspires kids to follow our professional Houston soccer teams, and spend the rest of their summer practicing at home for the upcoming season.”
The evening event is scheduled Tuesday, July 16 at Harris Park, beginning with registration from 5-8 p.m. A soccer mini camp at 7 p.m. will be led by former board president and longtime youth soccer coach Larry Mendez, Jr. “We are excited to be able to offer this mini camp to Wharton-area youth,” Kocian said. “It’s an opportunity for returning players to improve their skills, and for new players to experience the sport.”
WYSA Board President Miguel Santes added the following about the Dynamo and Dash.
“We are also excited to become a partner with the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash soccer teams” he said. “They will have a representative of the organization in Wharton for the event, beginning at 6 p.m.”
This past year, the Dynamo/Dash offered group discount tickets to players and parents of the Wharton soccer organization.
“It was a great opportunity for post-game activities and up-close access to the playing field,” said Santes. “The kids got to participate in soccer challenges after the Dynamo game, with opportunities to win prizes.”
Parents wanting to sign up their child for the 2019 season should bring the child’s birth certificate if they are a new player to the Wharton league. Children ages 4 to 11, as of September 1, 2019 are eligible to play. The registration fee for the season, with games running September through mid-November, is $85.
This year, games will be played at Harris Park on some weeknights and Saturdays.
Additional registration dates for the 2019 season are scheduled for the following days at McDonald’s restaurant:
• Monday, July 22 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.;
• Monday, July 29th from 6:30-7:30 p.m.; and
• Saturday, Aug. 3 from 10-11:30 a.m.
