The Brookshire Royal Falcons salvaged their season when they earned their first district win, 37-21, at home Friday against the Wharton Tigers, who finished their season winless in 10 games. Royal improved their season record to 4-6.
They scored two first quarter touchdowns before Wharton got on the scoreboard with a 1-yard run from freshman quarterback Jacoric Allen at the 11:53 mark. Junior Joshua Rivas earned the extra point attempt.
Royal would go into halftime with a 28-7 advantage, thanks to two Zamarion Gipson TDs. The quarterback finished with 117 yards rushing on 18 carries, and passed for 100 yards on 7-of-13 completions.
Royal only scored one offensive touchdown in the second half. However, the Falcons scored on a safety following a bad snap to the quarterback who was tackled in the end zone at the 9:35 mark of the third quarter.
However, the Tigers made up for it in the fourth quarter when they scored twice.
The first came on junior Rayshawn Hood’s 25-yard run with 10:05 left in the quarter. Sophomore quarterback Angel Gaona then threw a 19-yard strike to junior Jarrad Newsome with 3:50 left in the game.
Rivas connected on both his extra-point kicks.
Hood had 55 yards on nine carries, Newsome 60 yards receiving off three receptions, and Allen and Gaona combined for 74 yards passing on 6-of-13 completions.
Wharton defenders sophomore Ja’Korian Baldridge had an interception, and junior Garrison Burns and senior Stevie Roberts each had fumble recoveries.

Boling season ends
The Boling Bulldogs lost to the visiting Columbus Cardinals, 28-20, at home, Friday.
Boling (1-4 district, 4-6 season) scored the final touchdown of the game to close within 8 points with 46 seconds left, but the ensuing onside kick went out of bounds. Columbus (5-0, 8-2) kneeled the ball to end the district game and win a district title.
Columbus had a 14-0 lead when Boling scored in the second quarter on junior Jaxson Urbanek’s quarterback keeper at the 3:00 mark of the second quarter.
Columbus extended its lead 21-7 right before halftime.
Boling opened the half with a 10 play, 73-yard drive that was capped off by senior Nick Gutierrez’ 3-yard touchdown pass from Urbanek (9-of-19 passing, 119 yards).
Columbus took a 28-14 lead with less than four minutes to play. Urbanek and Gutierrez connected on the final pass play to end all scoring.

East Bernard second in district
The Van Vleck Leopards (5-0, 7-3) held on to win the District 14-3A title at home against the East Bernard Brahmas (4-1, 8-2), Friday.
EBHS scored the game’s last TD with 1:10 left on a Joshua Montalvo 4-yard run.
It was a defensive battle before Van Vleck went ahead 13-0 in the third quarter. EBHS’s Caleb Magness had a 10-yard run with 9:18 left in the game.
