WHS SOCCER

Wharton Lady Tigers’ soccer coach Donald Lindsey provided some details on the team’s play during the first games from the Lady Raiders Classic Tournament at Rice Consolidated.

In the first of two games, the Lady Tigers played the host school Rice Consolidated and battled the Lady Raiders to a 0-0 tie. Lindsey  said it came “on the strength of a strong defensive performance.” “A big shout out goes to the defensive line of Eryn Mendez, Aaliyah Rodriguez, Halie Perez, Angelie Rauda, Mia Hamlin, and goalkeeper Briana Mireles,” he said. The Lady Tigers got off eight shots but were unable to convert, but still a great performance overall.

In game two against rival El Campo, WHS jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Priscilla Munoz, assisted by Jaqueline Barcenas. The second goal was scored by Jaqueline and assisted by Arianna Rauda. The Lady Ricebirds scored a goal five seconds before halftime but the Lady Tigers persevered and held them off for the 2-1 victory.

The tournament continued on Friday, Jan. 17 with a game at noon against Hempstead.
