The Boling Bulldogs dropped a District 24-3A game following a road loss to the Palacios Sharks, 56-21, on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
The Sharks came out fast with a big 24-point first quarter. Boling held them to fewer and fewer points over the final three quarters, but the offense wasn't able to overcome the Sharks’ opening barrage.
Boling was led by Ruben Becerra who scored eight points, his brother Blayze added in six more.
The Bulldogs have two more games before closing out the first leg of district play.
Lady Bulldogs game
The Lady Bulldogs lost to the Palacios Sharkettes, 62-29.
While the Lady Bulldogs lost, they are still in the fourth playoff spot. Boling closed out the first half of district play at home with Tidehaven Lady Tigers Friday, Jan. 17.
BHS vs. Tidehaven
The Boling Lady Bulldogs closed out the first leg of district play with a home win over the Tidehaven Lady Tigers 48-33 on Friday, Jan. 17.
The Lady Bulldogs came out on fire scoring 17 points while keeping Tidehaven to eight points. Their big lead was short-lived as the Lady Tigers closed out the on a 12-4 run. Zacoryia Montalvo and Lexie Nelson who combined to score 12 points in the first quarter, were held to one point in the second.
The duo came out shooting in the third quarter and scored 11 of Boling's 16 points. Tidehaven cooled back down and Boling extended their lead to 37-24 going into the fourth quarter. Boling's offense slowed but kept scoring and again outshot Tidehaven.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs are 3-3 in district play currently in fourth place, one game behind East Bernard for the third seed.
The Boling Bulldogs came close to picking up their second district win, but at home, to the Tidehaven Tigers 60-55 on Friday, Jan.17.
Boling's offense was consistent scoring double-digit points in all four quarters. The defense held Tidehaven in check early allowing eight points, but a 21-point second quarter gave them the lead.
The Bulldogs hung with Tidehaven all game, but they couldn't put enough together to overcome the Tigers.
Blayze Becerra led the Bulldogs in points with 19.
BHS vs. East Bernard
The Boling Bulldogs came up a little short at home in their first encounter with the East Bernard Brahmas falling 52-50, Tuesday, Jan. 21.
After being routed by Palacios three games ago, the Bulldogs have come back and played back-to-back tight games with a loss of seven to Tidehaven and Tuesday's two-point loss to East Bernard.
East Bernard came out and hit the Bulldogs with a 17 point first quarter. Boling got two three's but ended the quarter down by six points.
Ruben Becerra scoreless in the opening quarter made seven points in the second and Boling evened up the game at the half 27-27.
Both teams stayed close the rest of the way, but in the end, free-throws were the difference.
While both teams went to the line in the final quarter, East Bernard took and made more shots then Boling and pulled out the win.
Blayze Becerra had a game-high 20 points.
The Bulldogs loss drops them to 1-3 in district play with a game left before ending the first round.
Lady Bulldogs game
The Lady Bulldogs, like the boys team, also had a tough close loss to the East Bernard Brahmarettes 41-40.
East Bernard took a 33-25 game into the fourth quarter. While EBHS led, it couldn't fully put Boling away as the Lady Bulldogs railed back outscoring East Bernard 15-8 in the fourth. In a close game, a couple of missed free-throws in the fourth ended up being painful going 6-9 at the line.
Lexie Nelson had a team-high 14 points. Logan Simpson tossed in eight more.
Boling in district play is currently 3-4 and in fourth place.
Boling boys and girls played Tuesday, Jan. 28 at home against Hitchcock.
