The Wharton High School tennis team opened its season with a 16-3 win over Waller High School on Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Travis Smith, Jr. Tennis Center at WHS.
Roben Eller, longtime WHS tennis coach, said her athletes didn’t let up in practices to prepare for the season opener at home.
“The kids have worked hard the last two weeks in preseason practice. Most the kids have been playing all summer long, so they are playing well early,” Eller said.
There’s still a lot of tennis to be played during the fall when scores are counted as a team.
“We are extremely excited about our season; the goal for us is to get to the state tennis tournament in College Station Oct. 31st,” a confident Eller said. “It is a long road, but we are just concentrating on getting better every week, and then winning will take care of itself.”
WHS has not played competitively since the Waller win.
This weekend, the Tigers we will be playing in the Little State Tennis Tournament in Corpus Christi, May 23-24.
WHS will then have an open date on Aug. 27.
Afterwards, the Tigers will play on the road in duals against Victoria West (Sept. 3, 4 p.m.), Port Lavaca Calhoun (Sept. 10, 4 p.m.) and Richmond Foster (Sept. 14, 9 a.m.).
They will host Bay City on Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.
