By press time, the Wharton Lady Tigers’ final score against the El Campo Lady Ricebirds was not available.
The all-important District 25-4A game played at El Campo High School was played Tuesday, Oct. 29.
At the time, it pitted El Campo, which 5-6, against Wharton, which was 4-7.
It was the final game of the regular season and it essentially determined which team would advance to the Class 4A playoffs representing the district’s fourth-place team.
If the Lady Tigers defeated ECHS, it would force a tiebreaker between the two. WHS lost to El Campo earlier this season at home in straight sets, but it was close, 17-25, 18-25, 13-25.
To arrive here, the Lady Tigers swept both Brookshire Royal and Stafford.
The top three seeds out of the district had already been determined.
Fulshear (No. 2) and Needville (No. 14), who are ranked according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, clinched the top spots. They also played against each other on Tuesday. The first game earlier in the season went to Fulshear in a 25-11, 25-15, 25-13 sweep.
Sealy is the third-place team and it lost its home and away games to both these teams – all of them in a sweep.
Coming into their final game of district, Wharton lost to Needville by 25-6, 25-0, 25-8 scores. El Campo fell to Sealy in five sets, 25-12, 21-25, 21-25, 25-21, 12-15.
