For only the third time this decade, the East Brahmarettes are moving on to the second round of the playoffs after their 54-29 bi-district win over the Trinity Lady Tigers at Waller High School Thursday, Feb. 11.
“The girls are excited about the possibility of playing a few more rounds,” Brahmarettes coach Steven Smith said. “Our goal was to peak by the end of district. We are playing well as a team at the right time and everyone is contributing.”
The Brahmarettes had three scorers in double-figures as they blew out their Class 3A opponent. The offense played well, but it was East Bernard’s defense that carried the win, allowing Trinity 10 or more points in only one quarter, the first.
“We played great defense and rebounded well last night,” Smith said. “When you hold your opponent to 29 points you expect to win.”
East Bernard started the night hitting three threes, two from freshman point guard Abby Hudgins and another from senior guard Zoey Talas, but Trinity hung with the Brahmarettes trailing four points after the first quarter.
The defense tightened allowing 19 points the rest of the way. East Bernard’s offense got contributions all over the court as the ball found multiple Brahmarettes, increasing the lead into the eventual rout.
Brahmarettes junior post Samantha Rabius, senior guard Madison Crist and Talas carried them through the second and third quarters scoring 19 of their 28 points.
Hudgins, Crist and Rabius led the Brahmarettes in scoring with 12 points each.
The Brahmarettes will meet the Pollok Central Lady Bulldogs in the second round. The time and place is not known as of press time. Pollok Central last year went one round in the playoffs.
