Joyce Ann Riha Janik

Funeral services for Joyce Ann Riha Janik, 89 of East Bernard, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m., rosary at 10 a.m. and Catholic Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Wharton City Cemetery, in Wharton.

Joyce was born July 12, 1930 in Glen Flora to the late Edward Allen and Mary Kallina Riha. She passed away Jan. 15, 2020 in Brookdale Assisted Living Community, in Houston, from a lengthy illness.

She is survived by her son Mark Allen Janik and wife Susan; grandsons: Jared Edward, Tate Allen, Vance Andrew and Royce David Janik of Houston; brother-in-law Charley Janik of Wallis; sisters-in-law Martha Janik and Bernice Janik of East Bernard; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Edwin Edward Janik, her parents Edward Allen and Mary Kallina Riha; and three brothers: Edward A. Riha, John J. Riha, and Charles A. Riha.

Joyce attended Crescent High School and was an honor graduate in 1948. She graduated from WCJC in 1950 and transferred and graduated with a BS in home economics from Southwest Texas Teachers College, in San Marcos in 1952. She taught home economics in Van Vleck and East Bernard High School from 1952 to 1959. She married Edwin Edward Janik on Nov. 24, 1956 in Wharton. After several years of marriage, they welcomed their son Mark Allen.

Joyce was a faithful member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed Czech music and dancing, cooking, collecting recipes and assembling several cook books, researching family genealogy and spending time with her family. She and Edwin enjoyed serving as a host family for a number of visitors from the Czech Republic.  Joyce and Edwin were also in business together as owners of Ed Riha Lumber Company in Glen Flora. The business was open from 1969 until 2006. For the last few years, she was a resident at Brookdale Assisted Living in Houston and enjoyed family visits, participating in craft projects and listening to musicians that came to play.

Memorial donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Holy Cross Catholic Church Scholarship Fund.
