Irene Matthys, 99, of Wharton, and formerly of Houston, passed away at a Wharton nursing center on Sept. 17, 2020, following a lengthy illness. She was born Jan. 26, 1921 in Wharton to the late Otto and Helen Kluck Matthys.
Irene was raised in the Wharton area and attended Crescent Schools. She later moved to Houston and for most of her life, enjoyed a career of office work and office management. She enjoyed traveling and visiting with friends and family. Irene was a devout Lutheran and faithfully attended services at St. Matthew Lutheran, her home church in Houston.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father Arnold Matthys; sisters: Helen McGee and Alma Matthys; and brothers: Lother Matthys and Herman Matthys.
She is survived by her brother Richard Matthys and wife Loveta of Lawton Oklahoma; and many friends and family members.
Graveside services were held Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with her minister, Pastor Mark Wiesenborn officiating.
