Martha Andel Janik, age 92, of East Bernard, passed away Dec. 16 at OakBend Medical Center, Richmond. She was born Sept. 9, 1928 in East Bernard to the late Vencil J. and Julia Scotka Andel Urbish.
Martha attended Muldoon School, Holy Cross Catholic School and then graduated from East Bernard High School. After high school, Martha worked at Otto’s Dry Goods for $65 a month, then later at Klecka’s Dry Goods as a buyer and sales clerk. In the early 1980s, Martha’s business experience inspired her to open her own gift shop out of her home, “The Potpourri.” While working, she enjoyed meeting new people and visiting with customers. Her grandchildren loved shopping at “Mimi’s” every time they visited. After retiring from The Potpourri, Martha volunteered at Gulf Coast Medical Center in the gift shop. She was also active in the Holy Cross Church Choir for 40+ years and during that time a member of the East Bernard Czech Singers for 14 years. She enjoyed performing at the various festivals and functions sharing her heritage with all generations.
Martha’s caring and joyful spirit was a gift to her family and to all who knew her. Her “Not to Worry” phrase and infectious laugh contributed to her bubbly sense of humor. Her life revolved around her husband, Bennie (of 67 years) and her adoring family, which she loved so dearly. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, cooking, gardening and the view from her back patio. On most days you would find her baking cookies, cakes or kolaches. There was always a friendly game of cards or dominoes to be played and Martha won most of the time. Her favorites were Bridge, Taroks and Blitz.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband Bennie, brothers Adolf, Edmund and Daniel Andel, sisters Mary Zahn and Janie Oldag, and grandson Blake Janik. She is survived by her sister Bernice Janik of East Bernard; sons: Michael Janik & wife Dori of Reno, Nev., Jeffrey Janik & wife Candy of Galveston, and Gary Janik & wife Linda of Sugar Land; grandchildren: Kyle Janik and wife Staci of Katy, Lacey Davis & husband Mark of Austin, April Kondra & husband Nick of West Columbia, Kellye Casey & husband Lance of Katy, Catherine Gregory & husband Joey of Sugar Land; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Special friends she wanted to acknowledge are: Rosemary Brewer, Sue Carmichael, Ruth & Buck Boettcher, Eugene Dusek, Allen Dusek, Jerry & Ada Zahn, Ed & Judy Schneider, Debbie Guthman, Esmerelda Gaytan, Elizabeth Fernandez, Mary Jane Perez, Wanda Lee, Amy Fusilier, Erin Deleon, Miguel Rendon and the Holy Cross Communicants.
The visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by a rosary at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 28 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. The funeral Mass will then be celebrated at 10 a.m. followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard.
