Janice Irene Simons, age 67, a resident of Washington, N.C., passed away to be with the Lord on Sunday June 9, 2019.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday June 15, in the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory and will be officiated by Minister Glenn Crocker.
Janice was born in Union County, S.C. on Sept. 5, 1951 to the late Doyle De Bruhl and Vava De Bruhl who survives. She graduated from Spring Branch High School in Houston in 1969 and attended the University of Houston where she graduated with honors earning a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education.
She began her long devoted and accomplished teaching career in 1979 teaching math and science at Needville Middle School in Needville. In 1985, her family relocated to Washington, N.C. where she taught honors math and science as part of the PS Jones Middle School family for 26 years before retiring on June 30, 2011. During this time, she continued her education by becoming a National Board certified teacher. In 2000-2001 she was chosen by the Math Education Area Committee for the Math Department at ECU to serve as math teacher-in-residence. In that role she worked with math professors to expand knowledge of current teaching trends and methodologies at the university level in the field of mathematics. She was awarded Teacher of the Year for PS Jones for the 2004-2005 school year. Her love of teaching and compassion for children was seen throughout her career as an educator. She was well liked among her students, parents and colleagues and touched the lives and hearts of many students in her community.
Mrs. Simons was also a cherished member of the Washington Garden Club where she originally served as vice president and then president for the years 2017, 2018 and part of 2019. She held certification as a master gardener and conducted programs and training at local and regional chapter events including her most recent program on Moonlight Gardening. Mrs. Simons also served on the House Committee with the Washington Yacht and County Club.
Janice is survived by her beloved husband of almost 48 years Karl Simons, of Washington, N.C., along with her two cherished sons; Burt Simons and wife Melissa, of Washington, N.C. and Brad Simons and wife Tanya, of Greenville, N.C.; her adored grandchildren, Jack, Charlotte, Marina and Everett; her loved mother Vava De Bruhl of Houston; beautiful sisters, Reba De Bruhl; Tana Navarre and husband Bubba, Greta Barsh and husband Kelly; nephews Buster Barsh and wife Carmen, Rusty Barsh and wife Felicia, Donald Vest and wife Ashley; niece Tabitha and husband Matt; along with great-nieces and nephews Grace, Chloe, Taylor, Maverick, Wyatt, Aiden, Brooklyn, Kolton, Remington, and Ruger.
To all whom were blessed to know Janice knew she was as beautiful on the inside as she was out. She lived a life of devotion to her family, especially to her grandchildren to whom she was affectionately called “Gammy.” Her compassionate spirit and graceful elegance will forever be missed.
The family will receive friends during a visitation held from 1-2 p.m. Saturday June 15 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington, N.C. and other times at the home, 1111 North Respess Street Washington, N.C. 27889.
