According to several media outlets, former Wharton resident Nikki Araguz Loyd passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at her home in Humble.

She is survived by her husband, William Loyd, and two children. Araguz was 44.

Advocates praised her efforts in bringing transgender rights to the forefront after she was involved in a Wharton County court battle over the legitimacy of her marriage. Her husband at the time, Thomas Araguz, died while serving as a firefighter for the Wharton VFD in 2010.

Araguz was active on social media, including Twitter and Facebook. She posted various things on each of her accounts a week before passing away. The cause of her death has not been determined.
