As the first month of the new year comes to a conclusion, the Wharton County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) reports there are 67 deaths that have been linked to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

El Campo has the most deaths with 35, followed by Wharton 25, East Bernard 4, and Boling 3.

The death total still differs from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). It has Wharton County at 87 deaths.

Wharton County elected officials have long accepted that the totals from the state will always be different from the county because of a backlog of cases that are turned into the state.

At the Wharton County Commissioners Court meeting, the OEM reported there were 120 active cases in El Campo, 85 in Wharton, 23 in East Bernard, 15 in Boling, 10 in Louise, 5 in Egypt, 4 in Hungerford, and 4 Lane City.

There are 269 active cases. Last Friday, there were 214 active cases.

Since the OEM began to report on the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been 3,119 confirmed cases in Wharton County.

Of those, the OEM said 2,783 cases have recovered. That is an 89.2 percent recovery rate.
