A few days after receiving one sealed bid for a rooftop exhaust fan project for the Wharton County Jail, the Wharton County Commissioners’ Court unanimously approved to move forward and award it during a regular Monday, Oct. 14 meeting.

Eldridge Air Conditioning turned in a bid of $23,943.75 on Sept. 9 to the Auditor’s Office.

Judge Phillip Spenrath said these exhaust fans are located over the bath area of the jail.

The funds will come from the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office residential line item.

He said not having shipped many inmates to other counties due to overcrowding like Matagorda or Fort Bend jails paved the way for funds. However, during the meeting, Sheriff Shannon Srubar said there were five male inmates shipped out.

“Several weeks ago while upgrading the air conditioning’s computer system, Eldridge Air Conditioning determined that the exhaust fans were not functional,” Spenrath said.

The county had budgeted $24,000 for this project before bidding was announced last month.
