MLK monument

Wharton residents made up of youth, adults and senior citizens converged on downtown Wharton to be part of the annual march in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Saturday, Jan. 18. They are shown next to a monument on the courthouse grounds.

The federal holiday would occur two days later on Monday, Jan. 20. Most of those who marched at the beginning on Fulton Street attended a service several blocks away at Caney Creek Church on Saturday. Another service in honor of MLK was held in Wharton at East Gate New Prosperity Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday, Jan 19.

For more details on both services, see the Wednesday, Jan. 15 issue of the Journal-Spectator.
