Rockport residents find Good Samaritans in Wharton You have a few good samaritans in your neighborhood. On Christmas Eve my wife, son and I were driving to Houston from Rockport to visit our daughter. Just outside of Wharton I glanced at my rear view mirror and saw nothing but white steam behind the car. I pulled off at the next exit and slowly drove to town seeking a gas station or some place with water. By the time I pulled into the Shamrock station the temperature gauge had shot up to the red "H." We were an hour from our destination and I had doubts our car was going any further this day. I got out of the car when a tall fellow pulled up alongside in a pickup truck. "I saw you on the highway," he said. I opened the hood and he noticed the water hose from the radiator to the engine had disconnected. He told me he would be back in a few minutes as he had to go home and retrieve some tools. When he returned he connected the hose and put the clamp in place. He stayed to make sure the water was staying in the engine. I went into the store to get some more change for the water/air dispenser. The woman behind the counter, young and pregnant, told me just to hit the on button as I would not have to pay for anymore water. We were back on the road in about half an hour. The man who helped us identified himself and Brandon Filla. I offered him a $20 bill for his time, but he wouldn't take it. Somehow I knew he wouldn't, but I had to offer. I never did get the name of the girls behind the counter. I owe them a debt of gratitude, too. Our Christmas was all the merrier knowing there are some wonderful strangers when one has trouble on the road. Our sincere thanks to Brandon and the girls at Shamrock. Signed, Charles, Brenda and Casey Steward |
