Ondrias honored at baby shower, Boling club celebrates 60 years

Leah Ondrias was given a baby shower last Sunday afternoon. Leah sat next to her mom Donna Galloway surrounded by a big group of lady friends who came to share her happiness. She would probably have the baby the next day, according to her mom. Gifts were being opened by the time I got there. Tables full of all sorts of packages and beautiful gifts. Another table held the cake with cookies and a variety of snacks and fresh fruits along with coffee and punch.

I got a few names of the guests while gifts were being passed around by two of the hostesses, aunts Kay Kunkel and Edy Menefee. Margaret Wobbe and Aileen Chumchal looked very comfortable in one corner having a good visit. Others sitting in the circle were Barbara Burris, Doris Drapela, Janet Konvicka, Jeanie Merka, Karen Machann, Rachel Ondrias, Kathryn Wendel, Christi Craft, Faye Evans, grandma Jan Ondrias, Sheryl Rhodes, Sara Garcia and Sophie Miska and her beautiful daughter Aubry Miska.

Dad-to-be Bryan Ondrias was also present but not so close to the circle. We are happy for the young couple and congratulations to grandparents to be Ernie and Jan Ondrias and Nat and Donna Galloway.

Megan Smith was honored with a come-and-go bridal shower Saturday at St. John's Parish Hall in New Taiton. It's hard to mention everyone, it was a very big shower but here are some of the guests I had the pleasure of visiting with; mother of-the-groom Kathy Bubela, mother-of-the-bride Charlene Smith, Annie Drastata, Martha Bubela, Molly Kresta, Lorraine Cranek, Louise Vesely, Dorothy Fiala, Clara and Helen Juranek, Debbie Krpec, Debbie Steinmann, Pat Kresta, Nancy Montello, Christina Smith, Marilyn Bubela and Savanna, Erin Smith, Denise and Margaret Leopold, Susan Koenig, Luanna Capps, Kim Pruitt, Cheyenne Raska and her mom Lurae Raska, Evelyn Linhart and my grandaughters Jacqueline and Helene Smith-Vaughan who came for the weekend.

St. John's Parish Hall is very nice and large, the whole area is beautiful. Some of the hostesses were Patsy Baker, Lennie Blaha, Lisa Bubela, Ruby Hoffmann, Bobbie Janak, Darlene Kubala, Lynette Linhart, Barbara and Charlene Socha, Teresa Treybig, Shirley Valchar, Joyce Korenek, Joyce Hajovsky, Donna Merta, Sharon Nielsen, Sherry Pietsch and Denise Rek.

There was plenty of tasty snacks, refreshments, kolaches and good cakes and pastry made by some of the ladies from that area, which are some of the best. Megan received useful gifts for her future home. She and fiancee Garrett Bubela will be married at 2 p.m. February 7, 2009 at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in El Campo.

Last week Ronnie and Kay Bollom were celebrating 33 years of wedded bliss with dinner at a local restaurant in Wharton. We also saw Lee and Debbie Lemson on their way out. At another table were

Paul and Bunnie Fertsch with a couple of their children and Joe and Patti Zetka and Wesley and Jessica Harris.

A beautiful card came in the mail from a very dear person we all love and respect, Sue Cannon. She writes, "What a joy it was to see this picture in the Wharton paper recently." (She sent me the clipping of the group of Outlar & Blair and Rugely and Blasingame employees.) "I think of those days often and how I loved Wharton, and so many dear friends there. Please give them all my love, and tell them our husbands couldn't have managed without all they did to help the clinics run so well! I have lived in Abilene for 17 years, near my oldest son, Paul. I still enjoy my Wharton paper and keeping up with friends. My love, Sue Cannon." Cannon was the wife of pediatrician Dr. Richard Cannon.

The Boling Lions Club celebrates its 60th anniversary on Sunday, Nov. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Boling Community Center on CR 162. Lions from Wharton and other clubs are invited to attend and help them celebrate this very special day. Congratulations!
