Dateline Wharton Poinsettia sale The Wharton County 4-H Exchange Group will be selling red poinsettias for $12 through Nov. 12. They will arrive on Nov. 24. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward the group's trip to Pennsylvania this summer. To order, call the Wharton County Extension Office at 532-3371. WCJC Twelfth Night Wharton County Junior College and The Greenroom Players will present William Shakespeare's classic romantic comedy Twelfth Night through Nov. 9 at the Horton Foote Theatre, Wharton campus. The play is being updated to the time of the early 70s with costumes, make-up, and music reflecting the idealized romance of that period. Show times are 7:30 p.m. for Nov. 8 and 2:30 p.m. for Nov. 9. Cost is $4 and students are free with ID. This is the drama department's entry in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and should prove to be a delightful evening's entertainment. A Center for the Arts series presentation. Mt. Carmel dance A benefit dance for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church is scheduled for tonight from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Wharton. Admission is $7 with children ages 12 and under admitted free. There will be food and a silent auction with music provided by D.J. "J.J." SHARE food drive Citifinancial's Wharton office is sponsoring a food drive through today to benefit the SHARE Program. The public is invited to bring non-perishable food items to the Citifinancial Wharton office located at 10314 Highway 59, unit F. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. . Red Cross Courses The Rio Colorado Chapter of the American Red Cross is pleased to announce the following Health and Safety courses: Adult/ Infant and Child CPR today and Saturday, Dec. 13 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. These classes will be held at First Baptist Church, 507 N. Fulton, Wharton. The CPR courses will cover rescue breathing, choking, and CPR skills. The cost of course is $35.00. Certifications for CPR classes are valid for one year. Registration fees are payable by check or money order and must accompany the application. The chapter must receive registration and fees no later than close of business Wednesday Nov. 5 or Dec. 10, respectively, prior to start of the class. Minimum of six participants required. KJT-KJZT turkey dinner St. John's KJT-KJZT will be hosting a Turkey Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 9 at Hungerford Hall. There will be dine in or carry out with a drive through lane. Serving begins at 10:30 a.m. Proceeds will help with the expenses of the hall. New Hope Anniversary The New Hope Community Church, 226 N. Fulton, is inviting the public to come and join them as the congregation celebrates its 115th Church Anniversary at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9. The guest speakers will be Pastor B.K. Williams and the Blue Run Baptist Church from West Columbia. The event will be held on the church grounds at Parrott Ave. and Railroad St. A meal of barbecue beef, chicken and sausage with side dishes will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and priced at $8 per plate. Soft drinks and adult beverages will also be available. An auction begins at 1 p.m. under the pavilion and there will be live music from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the Sil Krenek Band. Other food options include homemade pastry, barbecue on a bun and funnel cakes for sale while activities include a raffle, kids zone games and more. Dawson Elementary meeting There will be a public hearing to discuss the Dawson Elementary property on Monday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Wharton ISD Education Support Center, 2100 N. Fulton St. WISD Veterans' Day Wharton ISD Veterans' Day Programs to be held Nov. 10-11. The Wharton Jr. High Assembly is at 2:35 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10 in the competition gym. The Tuesday, Nov. 11 programs include: Sivells Elementary Assembly at 10 a.m. in the gym; Wharton Elementary School Assembly at 1:30 p.m. in the gym and Wharton High School at 12:30 p.m. in the High School gym. Plaza membership meeting The Plaza Theatre on the Square in Wharton will hold its annual meeting of the membership at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10. Veterans' Day Observance The Annual Veterans' Day Observance sponsored by the Pilot Club of Wharton Inc. will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Monument on the Courthouse Square. Refreshments will be served before and after the ceremony by the Pilot Club of Wharton on the sidewalk next to the monument. WCJC Veterans salute The WCJC Pioneer band will be performing a salute to America's veterans on Tuesday night, Nov. 11 in the Horton Foote Theater in the WCJC Fine Arts Building at 7:30 p.m. Included in the concert will be the POW/MIA Ceremony. All former and active military personnel are invited to attend. Patrons of the Arts, faculty, staff and students will be admitted free. Veterans will be guests and admitted free. General admission cost is $4. Food manager training Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Wharton County will be offering a food manager certification training course. Food establishments permitted by the Texas Department of State Health Services must have one certified food manager. The training course will be offered Nov. 12 and 13 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Extension Office at 210 S. Rusk in Wharton. The cost of the course is $89 and includes training, materials and the State food manager certification exam. Hazard Mitigation planning The Texas Colorado River Floodplain Coalition (TCRFC) will hold the second in a series of public meetings as part of the group's ongoing efforts to update the 2004 Hazard Mitigation plan. The meeting will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at Caney Church, 118 Milam. The purpose of this open meeting is to update the community on the progress in developing the plan and to solicit information that can help the project team in identifying and analyzing hazards affecting residents of the participating jurisdictions (Wharton, Matagorda, Colorado and Fayette Counties and communities) and in recommending possible actions that can be taken to reduce the impact of those hazards. Lions Club district governor The Wharton Lions Club will be visited by District Governor Howard Clayton at their Thursday, Nov. 13 lunch meeting at Hinze's. All Lions are reminded to wear their vests and to not miss this meeting. EB Little League The East Bernard Little League will be having a meeting on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Baptist Church. Interested persons are welcome and encouraged to come and make comments and suggestions concerning ways to improve our league. Library Anniversary The celebration of the Wharton County Library's 10 year anniversary of the new library facility will be held during the Library Open House on Friday, Nov. 14. from 4-6 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend, have light refreshments, and take a tour of the library highlighting the past and present. Baked potato fundraiser A Baked Potato Dinner Sale to benefit the Caney Creek Church Youth Fund for summer camp 2009 will be held Friday, Nov. 14 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Your choice of BBQ stuffed or Broccoli and cheese stuffed with butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, and chives.
