WCJC Job Fair Wharton County Junior College is hosting a WCJC Community Job Fair to assist students and the general public in obtaining both full-time and part-time employment. The job fair will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at the WCJC Sugar Land Campus, 550 Julie Rivers Dr., Sugar Land, Texas. Companies that will be present include the City of Sugar Land, Fastenal Industrial and Construction Supplies, Fort Bend Sheriff's Office, Home Depot, Houston Police Department, Sephora and Wal-Mart. Holiday food drive A Holiday Food Drive to benefit the Caney Creek Church Food Pantry is being sponsored by Angels Care Home Health through Oct. 25. Interested persons can drop off non-perishable food items at Angels Care Home Health, CVS, Wal-Mart or the Wharton Chamber of Commerce. For information call 282-2629. Of Mice and Men The Plaza Theatre on the Square in Wharton presents the first production in its 2008-2009 Season, John Steinbeck's drama Of Mice and Men, weekends Oct. 18-26. Curtaintime is 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. The box office opens one hour before showtime. Glen Flora VFD The Glen Flora Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Wharton County Youth Fairgrounds Crescent Community Center. A beef stew, cornbread and dessert meal, priced at $7, will be served from from 6-7:30 p.m. There will be an auction starting at 7 p.m. and a dance from 8-11 p.m. Nigerian Culture The River Road 4-H Club is partnering with the Wharton County 4-H to host a Nigerian Culture Presentation from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 in the Extension Office meeting room. A Nigerian woman and her daughter will be traveling from Houston to give Wharton County an informative presentation on Nigerian Cultures. You do not have to be a 4-H member to attend. Booster golf tourney The East Bernard Athletic Booster Club will hold its Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the New Gulf Golf Club. The tournament will use a four-man scramble format with admission $60 per player, per round including cart, green fees, food and drinks. There will be shotgun starts at 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Prizes awarded for first, second and third place teams in each flight with closest to the hole and door prizes. Preregistration is requested with entry forms available at Kresta Automotive, Savon Drugs, Vincek's Smokehouse, EB Rice Marketing and New Gulf Golf Course. Stew supper and gun raffle The East Bernard Volunteer Fire Department is hold a stew supper and gun raffle on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at the American Legion Hall in East Bernard. The meal will be served starting at 6:30 p.m. with the raffle at 8 p.m. WCJC Chamber Singers Wharton County Junior College is pleased to present the Chamber Singers Concert on Thursday, Oct. 23. This talented group will sing many favorites - opening with The Star Spangled Banner and ending with some bouncy boogie woogie! The performance will be in the Horton Foote Theatre, located in the Duson Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $4 and students with ID are free. This is a Center for the Arts production. Chamber golf The Wharton Chamber of Commerce will be holding is inaugural golf tournament on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Wharton Country Club. New Zion mission workshop New Zion Bethel Baptist Church is inviting the public to share in their annual mission workshop on Saturday, Oct. 25. The workshop theme is "The Importance of Prayer." Plaza entertainment Plaza Live and Plaza Classics will team up to present an evening of grown-up Halloween fun at the Plaza Theatre on the Square in Wharton. Plaza Live kicks off with a concert by Stephanie Briggs and the Oso at 8 p.m, followed by a costume contest at 11:30 p.m. and a midnight movie presented by Plaza Classics. Friends of the Library There will be a meeting of the Friends of the Wharton County Library at the Central Library in Wharton at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 31. The community is invited to come and support your library by helping rejuvenate the library's Friends group. Topics will include planning the upcoming 10 year anniversary of the library and membership drive. Join your fellow library supporters and join the Friends for this fun and informational meeting. Bake sale Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church is having a sale of home baked pastries starting at 7 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 31 in front of the Plaza Theater. There will be pies, cakes, kolaches and cookies. All proceeds go toward the building fund. Arrive early for the best selection. Jerusalem Baptist appreciation Jerusalem Baptist Church will be honoring Pastor and Sister E.G. Williams with their 25th Appreciation Services beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31. Pastor L. Jones of St. Paul Baptist Church will be the guest speaker. The services will climax starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2 with Pastor I.V. Alfred of Greater Macedonia Baptist Church as the guest speaker. Red Cross Courses The Rio Colorado Chapter of the American Red Cross is pleased to announce the following Health and Safety courses: Adult/ Infant and Child CPR on Saturday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Dec. 13 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. These classes will be held at First Baptist Church, located at 507 N. Fulton, Wharton. The CPR courses will cover rescue breathing, choking, and CPR skills. The cost of course is $35.00. Certifications for CPR classes are valid for one year. Registration fees are payable by check or money order and must accompany the application. The chapter must receive registration and fees no later than close of business Wednesday Nov. 5 or Dec. 10, respectively, prior to start of the class. Minimum of six participants required. Fulton, is inviting the public to come and join them as the congregation celebrates its 115th Church Anniversary at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9. The guest speakers will be Pastor B.K. Williams and the Blue Run Baptist Church from West Columbia. All current and former choir members are invited to a special choir rehearsal on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at the church. Cyril and Methodius Church in Damon has rescheudled its church barbecue and bazaar for Nov. 9. The event will be held on the church grounds at Parrott Ave. and Railroad St. A meal of barbecue beef, chicken and sausage with side dishes will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and priced at $8 per plate. Soft drinks and adult beverages will also be available. An auction begins at 1 p.m. under the pavilion and there will be live music from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the Sil Krenek Band. Other food options include homemade pastry, barbecue on a bun and funnel cakes for sale while activities include a raffle, kids zone games and more. The Diamonds at WCJC If you love 1950s doo-wop music, make plans to attend the Friday, Nov. 14 performance of The Diamonds at the Wharton County Junior College Horton Foote Theater. The family-friendly performance begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 and benefit the WCJC Band. Boling Center golf Due to Hurricane Ike, the Boling Community Center 10th Annual Four-Person Scramble Benefit Golf Tournament has been rescheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Newgulf Golf Club. Tee time is 8 a.m. Entry fee is $65 per person or $260 per team. Team prizes are $600 for first, $400 for second and $300 for third. A raffle drawing will be held the day of the tournament with the top prize being a 2004 EZ-Go golf cart. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.
