BOLING - It's a new season for Boling's football team as they host rival Danbury in the Bulldogs' District 29- 2A-opener Friday night.
"Its like a second wind so to speak," said Boling coach Neal Majewski. "We're ready to go and very excited about our possibilities and our chances of what lies ahead."
Boling, which had an open date last Friday, owns a 0-4 record, losing to Houston Christian, Weimar, East Bernard and Louise.
"Every week that goes by, we see the teams that we played in our nondistrict schedule were very, very good," said Majewski. "We played it (a tough slate) so we would be prepared for district. It's exciting and, without a doubt, I think that we have a chance to make a run at the playoffs."
Danbury, which lost to Victoria St. Joseph 26-0 last week, is 2-2. The Panthers opened the season by beating Danbury and Anahauc, before losing to Weimar and the Flyers.
"They started off well and then had to deal with the hurricane," said Majewski.
The Panthers missed two games because of Ike and almost a week of practice as well.
"They are just getting back in the swing of things," said Majewski.
Boling is ranked 192nd in Jerry's Football ratings with a 98 power rating.
Danbury is ranked 141st with a 112 power rating. The Panthers are a 12- point favorite.
Danbury beat Boling 22-18 last year, and the 2006 Bulldogs beat Danbury 35-7.
This is the 27th meeting between the two schools since they first played back in 1979. Boling has won 24 games and Danbury's previous win before last year came in 2000 when the Panthers beat the Bulldogs 28-12. That win snapped a 68-game district losing steak by the Panthers dating back to the 1990s
Danbury has been outscored 80-71 and is averaging 304 yards per game. The Panther defense is yielding 264 yards per game.
The Panthers are led by quarterback Scott Zimmerle who has scored four touchdowns and rushed for 363 yards.
He has completed 33 of 68 passes for 550 yards. He has five TD passes and three interceptions.
Matt Dees has caught 11 passes for 206 yards, and Jake DeBerry has caught nine passes for 188 yards.
"They are a very talented team with lots of weapons," said Majewski. "It's going to be a tough game."
Boling is led by quarterback Justin Hobbs who has scored two touchdowns rushed for 224 yards on 52 carries. He has completed 51 of 98 passes for 638 yards. He has seven TD passes and four interceptions.
Kalin Ray has caught 32 passes for 395 yards, five of which have been for touchdowns.
Boling worked on the physical aspect of its game during the open week, and Majewski believes that will play and important role on Friday.
"We have to get after it from the get go, " said Majewski. "We have be tough, be mean and have to want it. We need to come out and set the tone early and make things happen for us."
He said this week's practices will be important.
"I think this game will be won or lost by what we do Monday through Thursday practice wise," said Majewski. "If we come out focused and physical Monday through Thursday, then I expect a good deal on Friday."
The coach also believes the game will come down to execution and turnovers.
"They are usually the two factors," said Majewski. If you execute the schemes, you feel you should be at a advantage.
"That will dictate who comes out ahead."
Hitchcock, who is 2-2, visits Van Vleck who is 2-3 on Friday and 3-1 Industrial hosts 1-3 Tidehaven in the other district games.
"Without a doubt there is question marks all over the place about this district race," said Majewski.
"Van Vleck is becoming a better team and Industrial is on a roll
It's going to be a fun race and you better buckle up every Friday night. You can't take anybody lightly."
If you don't go into a game prepared, or think you going to walk into one with ease, you're going to be mistaken.
Majweski welcomes back Dustin Ortiz back to the lineup after suffering a concussion early in the season.
"He's a two way starter and that's huge having him back," he said.
