WHS Tennis rummage sale

The Wharton High School Tennis Team Rummage Sale will be held from 7-11 a.m. today at the WHS "Old" Gym, No. 1 Tiger Ave. Items include clothing, furniture, household items, sporting goods and other. All proceeds benefit the WHS Tennis Team.

GCMC screening day

The Gulf Coast Medical Center is inviting the community to a Meet the New Physicians and Screening Day from 8:30-11:30 a.m. today in the hospital cafeteria and classrooms. Physicians being introduced are Dr. M. Faisal Khan, Neurologist; Dr. Nathan Nguyen, Family Practice; and Dr. Mark Vann, Orthopedic Surgeon. There will be free cholesterol screens from 8:30-9:30 a.m.; screening for stroke, sleep apnea and diabetes; arthritis and infection control education, a teleneurology demonstration. A continental breakfast will be served.

Wharton Rotary Gala

The Wharton Rotary Club presents the 2008 Rotary Gala featuring a performance by Asleep at the Wheel tonight at the Wharton Community Civic Center. The evening will begin with a social hour and hors d'oeuvres at 6 p.m. with the show starting at 7 p.m. Admission is $60 per person. WCYF golf tournament

The Wharton County Youth Fair Third Annual Golf Tournament will be held today at the Newgulf Golf Course. The entry fee is $65 per person or $260 per team. To enter a team, call the fair office at 677-3350.

Brisket benefit

A brisket benefit sale to raise funds to cover medical expenses for Margaret Worthy will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Von-Wil Ford in Wharton. Hosted by the Wharton Masonic Lodge No. 621, the event will benefit Worth, who was diagnosed with cancer and does not have the financial resources to begin her surgeries. Tickets can be purchased at Larry's Texas Cafe and Cantina, Glass Southwest and Von-Wil Ford. The price is $40 for a whole brisket and $25 for half-a-brisket.

New Mount Olive BC The New Mount Olive Baptist Church Choir is presenting the program "What Train Are You On?" at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27. The church is located at 1941 County Road 448, Rev. Jimmy Wright, pastor; Deacon Tim Green, president.

Caney Creek Church Movie

Join Caney Creek Church for Saturday Night at the Movies, Sept. 27 for free family entertainment. This week's movie will be a classic comedy. Everything is free - the movie, real movie popcorn, candy and sodas. Cartoons and concessions open at 6:30 p.m., the movie starts at 7 p.m. For information, call 532-2533.

The Wharton County Junior College Senior Citizen Program is inviting you to play Bingo with other seniors with prizes and refreshments furnished by Avalon Nursing Home from 2-3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29 at the WCJC Senior Center, LaDieu Building at 911 Boling Hwy. If you are 60 years of age or older you are invited to attend.

The Wharton County Retired Teachers Association Fall District meeting will be held Wednesday, Oct. 1 at Christ Lutheran Church, 1401 Ave. I in El Campo. Registration is 8:30-9 a.m. Texas Retired Teachers Association State President Dora Scott Nichols will be the keynote speaker. Marilyn Sebesta and her sister from Bryan will provide singing entertainment. Dinner will be served.

Our Journey of Hope

The First United Methodist Church of East Bernard is offering the biblically-based training for ministering to Cancer Patients in conjunction with Our Journey of Hope, a spiritual outreach program of Cancer Treatment Centers of America, on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the church, 421 Pietzsch Street. Call JoAnn Vasina, church secretary, at 335-6298 by Oct. 1 to register. The fee of $20 includes a light breakfast, snacks and a boxed lunch.

WCJC Jazz Band

On Thursday, Oct. 2, Wharton County Junior College, Center for the Arts, will present "JAZZ! A Concert". This program will feature the WCJC Jazz Band playing many favorite jazz and blues selections, including "Tuxedo Junction," "String of Pearls" and "In the Mood" along with several other pieces. The program will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Horton Foote Theatre located in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton Campus. Ticket prices are $4.00. Students free with ID. Chamber Mixer

A Wharton Chamber of Commerce membership mixer is planned for 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2 at NoNam Boutique at 223 Cutbirth Rd.

River Road 4-H

The next River Road 4-H monthly meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2 at the Wharton County Extension Office. Members are reminded to not forget to bring your cans if you have them.

Broken Chains Ministry

BHS Council bake sale Boling High School Student Council would like to invite everyone to their cake auction at the Lion's Club Carnival on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Boling High School. St. John's Church Bazaar

The Annual St. John's Catholic Church Hungerford will hold its annual church bazaar on Sunday, Oct. 5. The meal is priced at $8 and will be served starting at 10:30 a.m. The menu includes barbecue chicken, beef, sausage and all the trimmings including the ladies famous sauerkraut. There will be an auction starting at 12:15 p.m. and all types of entertainment including Bingo, a country story and kids rides and activities. The public is invited to attend.

Chamber business luncheon

The Wharton County Chamber of Commerce will hold its next Business Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at the Wharton Civic Center. The topic for the luncheon is the impact the new railroad will have on Wharton. Tickets are $15 each and includes a roast beef dinner catered by Hinze Bar-BQue. BHS Council blood drive

The Boling High School Student Council is hosting its first blood drive for this school year on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Ag Building. Bethlehem Baptist Homecoming

The Bethlehem Baptist Church, formerly known as Old Bethlehem Baptist, Rev. Ray Felder Pastor, will be celebrating the church's homecoming at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12. The celebration will take place in the new church located on Don Tol Rd. in New Gulf. The Rev. D. Archie will be the guest minister.

Old Bethlehem Baptist Church, M.A. Miller pastor, is welcoming the community to its Homecoming Family and Friends Day at Grove Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Derrick D. Brount, pastor, in Pledger on Oct. 12. The service will start at 2:30 p.m. with the sermon by the Rev. J.J. Roberson of Mount Hebron Missionary Baptist Church in Houston. Dinner will be served.
