Prayers and hope go out to hurricane victims
Who's News

Dear friends, it's been a diffi- cult time for everyone, especially those who were in Ike's way. You have been in our prayers. Physical objects can be replaced, believe me, I know by experience more than once having been through earthquakes and war.

Fortunately this is a great country we live in. If you are honest and work hard enough, you will regain what you lost. God always takes care of his children, he loves us and will give us the tools to redo what has been lost. May God be with all of you!

Shaye Kubesch Mathews was given a baby shower on Sept. 6 at Wharton Country Club. Hostessing the event were: Ann Soderstrom, Donna Chambers, Donna Nelson, Barbara Stephenson, Carol Wooton, Morrow Lou Sims, Debbie Williams, Mary Baade and Margie Sklar.

They served an assortment of sandwiches, fruit, breakfast casserole, coffee and punch and a cake that had "Skylar" written on it. Shaye and husband Neil Mathews expect a baby girl to be named Skylar Aspen Mathews. The hostesses gave Shaye a red stroller.

Decorations were done in pink and green with baby items, dolls, children's books, baby clothes, etc, all part of the decor. The Mathews expect Skylar to arrive in late October.

I want to thank John Zerwas, M.D., Our Texas House of Representative, District 28, for the very nice card I received last Saturday and his kind words regarding my column in the Wharton Journal.

Due to Ike the anniversary celebration of Willie and Gladys Gavranovic was cancelled, as was the KC Bazaar.

Congratulations to James and Cindy Vincek on their 18th anniversary of wedded bliss.

Tommy, Diane and Christie Rieger were in Kansas City, Mo., for a couple of weeks visiting sons Scott and John and their wives, Jennifer and Lori, and families.

Enjoyed my visit with Laurie Hippel who moved back to Wharton from Austin. She has a 10-year-old daughter Maren Ellis and Laurie looks great. She is going back to school. She was with Kim Kinkade who has been in Wharton for a week from Sebring, Fl. Kim came to see her parents Lester and Betty Kinkade. Lester is receiving rehab therapy after recent surgery.

Kim moved away 15 years ago, she kept her maiden name but she and her husband have an 11-year-old son. Each one owns their own business and are enjoying their lives. She returned to Florida on Tuesday.

Kathy Smolik is another friend who is recuperating after recent knee surgery performed in Houston. She is doing well.

Our congratulations and wishes of happiness go to James Kyle Anders and Tonya Lynn Mathews. They were married Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Wharton by Rev. Mack Mathis. She is the daughter of Robbie and Tessa Mathews. Kyle is the son of James Anders

and Chris Cerny. An intimate catered dinner reception

Some of the special guests were Victor Cerny, Viola Anders, Margaret Davis of Lufkin; Kyle's grandmothers, Yvonne and Lester Johse; her maternal grandparents, Trisha and Grace Huffman of Lake Jackson; Chance Bailey, Trevor Mathews, Todd and Shauna Johse and Karen West.

First United Methodist Church Pastor Paul Quiggins announced to his congregation that his last Sunday as their pastor will be next Sunday, Sept. 28. Rev. Paul and his wife Kerri, a dear nurse with Houston Hospice will be leaving Wharton. Tomorrow there will be the 21st Round Up Dinner following the morning service at the church. The dinner will serve as a dual purpose. A farewell dinner to Paul and Kerri as well as a retirement dinner. If you need more information you may call Tammy Sangalli or Mary Ellen Martin. We hate to see the Quiggins leave, they have earned the love and respect of the Wharton community.

I know I will miss seeing Kerri, and Paul wearing his very special hat.

Last Wednesday the S.P.O.T. Education Committee meeting met at the Wharton Library. Those present were Barbara Blazek, Morna Nation, Kay Sikes, Betty Joyce Sikora, Julie Upchurch and Marilyn Sebesta.

Due to the recent storm several members had conflicts, they have scheduled another meeting to be held Monday, Sept. 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the El Campo Library.

S.P.O.T.'s mission is to educate the public with regard to responsible pet ownership and much more.

Rev. Dominic Pastor of Holy Family Church is on vacation until Oct. 15.

He is in Ghana, his native country visiting his family. Please pray for his safety.

Liz Locke Hoskins's baby shower is this afternoon at The Lodge from 2 to 4 p.m.

St. Thomas thrift store is looking for volunteers to help man the shop one Saturday a month and Friday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Contact Curtis Wilkins for more information.

I wish to thank the many friends who gave their unused prescription glasses to be recycled, a project of the Lions Club.

They were brought to me at work and now I will take them to Dr. Keith Ermis at Family Vision.

The glasses will go to needy people who can't afford glasses. Also the cell phones for our soldiers.

We got bags full of them that will also be recycled and sent to a hero who is somewhere fighting for our freedom.

The Wharton community always responds and from the bottom of our hearts we are thankful.

Also I want to thank the many volunteers who came to help during the evacuation at our facility.

Brad Macha, the environmental and nursing departments and staff who took good care of our elderly with love and compassion and traveled with them for safety to sister homes. There were no complaints and everybody had a safe return. God Bless you all!

I love what Billie Jones had to say. Phyllis Sliva is incredible.

I know her well because we worked together for a long time.

The rest of the crew are also amazing.

Wharton people are great and we are fortunate to have their friendship and to live in this community.

Enjoy this beautiful weather, be safe. See you next week!
