Dateline Wharton Museum Hispanic Histories The public is invited to the Wharton County Historical Museum's Hispanic Family History Project exhibit and reception today from 1-4 p.m. Many new family histories and photos will be displayed. Business seminar The Wharton Economic Development Corporation, Wharton Chamber of Commerce and City Development Corporation of El Campo will be hosting a free business seminar today. Participants may register by calling 532-0999 or 543-6727. A free lunch is provided by Capital One Bank of Wharton. Learning new practices and changing for growth is critical for a business to survive in this global economy. Food drive Gentiva Health Services is holding its Fourth Annual Food Drive through Sunday, Sept. 7. Food pantries and charities are reporting a record low, their shelves are empty and the needs are growing. Gentiva is asking the public help make a difference by contrbuting to the food drive. Square dancing An opportunity to explore the art of Square Dancing will be provided at an open house sponsored by the Cotton Square Dancers from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Monday Sept. 8 and Monday, Sept. 15 at the Wharton County Fairgrounds Gym. Senior Bingo The Wharton County Junior College Senior Citizen Program is inviting area seniors to play Bingo with other seniors with prizes and refreshments furnished by Angels Care Home Health from 2-3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8. at the WCJC Senior Center, LaDieu Building, 911 Boling Hwy. If you are 60 years of age or older you are invited to attend. Heather's Dream The Heather's Dream Cancer Support Group for cancer patients, survivors and families will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8 at Caney Creek Church. A children's cancer support group, Heather's Angels, is forming and will meet at the same time as the Heather's Dream group. For information, call Misty at 361-258-1611. Boling Boosters The Boling Athletic Booster Club will meet at 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8 in the Boling High School Gym film room following Open House. Membership in the booster club is only $5 and all BISD athlete families, friends, and community members are encouraged to join. Aggie Moms Aggie Moms will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at J Brew in El Campo (located across from the El Campo Post Office). All moms of Aggies are urged to come. You do not have to be a member - just a mom of a current or former Aggie. Moms exchange information about happenings at A&M and share tips on how to manage college life. Boling Golf Tournament The Boling Community Center 10th Annual Benefit 4-Person Scramble Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13. Tee time is 8 a.m. The entry fee is $65 per person or $260 per team. Team prizes are $600 for first, $400 for second and $300 for third. Top drawing prize is a 2004 EZ-Go golf cart. Alpha Iota The Alpha Iota Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International will be holding first meet of its new year at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the new Wharton Elementary School. K of C Bazaar The Knights of Columbus Council 3262 will hold its 2008 Bazaar and celebration on Sunday, Sept. 14 at the Knights of Columbus Home at 2820 N. Fulton in Wharton. A barbecue meal of beef and sausage with all the trimmings will be served starting at 11 a.m. with plate priced at $7 in advance and $7.50 at he door. Drive through plates will be available. Dawson Elementary meeting A meeting to discuss the future of Dawson Elementary will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 at the Wharton ISD Administration Office at 2100 N. Fulton St. Anyone interested may attend. Angel Food Ministries Angel Food Ministries introduces new Senior Box Meals. Ten no sodium added, low fat, nutritionally balanced meals for only $25. That is only $2.50 per meal. AFM orders are due by Monday, Sept. 15 at noon. Distribution will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 8:30- 10 a.m. Regular boxes are still only $30 and there are 5 different specials that can be added this month. All proceeds will go to benefit the WJHS and WHS athletic programs including the WISD Strength and Fitness Center and scholarships for graduating seniors. GCMF program The Gulf Coast Medical Foundation will be sponsoring three workshops over the next year to nonprofit organizations in Wharton, Matagorda and Fort Bend Counties. The first in this three-part series will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at the Wharton County Historical Museum. Titled "The Delicate Dance of Board and Staff," the workshop will offer information about key duties of board members, key factors for success, interactions of board and staff, effective communication techniques, and tools for effective board meetings. This workshop is primarily targeted to board chairs, board members and executive directors of nonprofit organizations. Registration is free, but all participants must register by Monday, Sept. 15. BBQ cook-off The American Legion Post 87 and VFW Post 4474 is holding a BBQ Cook-off for Building Fund on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20 at the American Legion Grounds in Wharton. First place prize is $500 with second and third place receiving trophies. Checkin is Friday at noon with judging starting at noon on Saturday. Space are first come-first served. The entry fee is $75. Spiritual workshop East Gate-New Prosperity Baptist Church is inviting the pbulic to share in a spiritual workshop presented by the church's mission auxiliary on Saturday, Sept. 20. The theme is "Eight Ways God Speaks to Men" and covers several topics with a summarization presented by Rev. Robert Maxey of Greater Macedonia Baptist Church in Texas City. Registration is $10 and runs 9-9:30 a.m. with the workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A lunch will be served. The church is located at 329 FM. 102, Rev. Ruiel Taylor III pastor, Rosa Green president and Janet Sanford sponsor. Church barbecue and bazaar Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Damon is holding a barbecue and bazaar on Sunday, Sept. 21 on the church grounds at Parrott Ave. and Railroad St. A meal of barbecue beef, chicken and sausage with side dishes will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and priced at $8 per plate. Soft drinks and adult beverages will also be available. An auciton begins at 1 p.m. under the pavilion and there will be live music from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the Sil Krenek Band. Other food options include homemade pastry, barbecue on a bun and funnel cakes for sale whle actitivies include a raffle, kids zone games and more. Dateline Wharton is a calendar of upcoming events in Wharton and surrounding communities. Normally space permits only events that will occur in the next two weeks. It is intended for special activities open to the public rather than regularly recurring meetings.
