Dateline Wharton WHS 2008 Yearbooks The Wharton High School 2008 Yearbooks are in. If you ordered one, they may be picked up in the high school library. School supplies The St. James Baptist Church, 815 Mattie St., will be distributing free school supplies from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the church. For information, contact Debbie Baines at 532-8250. Boys and Girls Club Boys and Girls Club of Wharton is now conducting registration for After School Program memberships Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Wharton Dobson Youth Center. Children ages 6-18 (still in school) can register. After School Program will run from Sept. 2, 2008 to May 29, 2009 from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for youth K-6th grade and 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. grades 7-12. Heather's Dream The Heather's Dream Cancer Support Group for cancer patients, survivors and families is moving its regular first Monday of the month meeting to Monday, Sept. 8 to accomodate the Labor Day Weekend. Survivors group The Hope After Shattered Dreams ministry for Wharton County residents who have experienced a loss resulting from, but not limited to, death, divorce, job or deteriorating health is welcome to attend. Fiesta Parade Parade applications for the Fiesta on the Square, scheduled for Saturday Sept. 6 in Wharton, are now available. The sign-up deadline is Sept. 1. Entry is free. Jackson Family Reunion The descendants of the late Jesse and Viola Jackson will be celebrating a family reunion starting at noon, Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Wharton American Legion Hall. This is the 35th Annual Reunion for the family. Jews for Jesus Jews for Jesus will present Jewish Gospel music and drama to express the thrill of knowing the Messiah Jesus and the love that compels them to tell others. The "Liberated Wailing Wall" will perform at First Baptist Church, 607 N. Fulton at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31. River Road 4-H It's that time of the year again. River Road 4-H is having their first monthly meeting Thursday, Sept. 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the Wharton County Extension Office. Museum Hispanic Histories The public is invited to the Wharton County Historical Museum's Hispanic Family History Project exhibit and reception on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 1-4 p.m. Many new family histories ad photos will be displayed. Wharton School start The Wharton ISD start date for students will be Sept. 2, the Tuesday after Labor Day. Parents of Prodigals A P.O.P. support group, Parents of Prodigals, is forming in Wharton. Membership will be limited to no more than 12 people so it is important to sign up early by calling 282-9365 or 532-4295 and ask to speak to Mack or Jayne. There is no fee. The target date for the first meeting is Thursday, Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m. Hearing loss workshop A workshop on hearing loss will be held at the Texas AgriLife Extension Service Wharton County building at 210 S. Rusk in Wharton on Thursday, Sept. 4 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The public is invited to this free event. Sponsoring groups are the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, and Communication Axess Ability Group (CAAG). Up to six hours of CEU credits are available for audiologists, speech-language pathologists, hearing aid dispensers, early childhood interventionists, sign language interpreters, social workers, and occupational therapists. Business seminar The Wharton Economic Development Corporation, Wharton Chamber of Commerce and City Development Corporation of El Campo will be hosting a free business seminar on Sept. 6. Learning new practices and changing for growth is critical for a business to survive in this global economy. Aggie Moms Aggie Moms will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at J Brew in El Campo (located across from the El Campo Post Office). All moms of Aggies are urged to come. You do not have to be a member - just a mom of a current or former Aggie. Moms exchange information about happenings at A&M and share tips on how to manage college life. Boling Golf Tournament The Boling Community Center 10th Annual Benefit 4-Person Scramble Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13. Tee time is 8 a.m. The entry fee is $65 per person or $260 per team. Team prizes are $600 for first, $400 for second and $300 for third. Top drawing prize is a 2004 EZ-Go golf cart. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. To enter a team, buy a raffle ticket or for information, call Elizabeth or Gary Mach at 657-2705. All proceeds benefit the Boling Community Center Complex. K of C Bazaar The Knights of Columbus Council 3262 will hold its 2008 Bazaar and celebration on Sunday, Sept. 14 at the Knights of Columbus Home at 2820 N. Fulton in Wharton. A barbecue meal of beef and sausage with all the trimmings will be served starting at 11 a.m. with plate priced at $7 in advance and $7.50 at he door. Drive through plates will be available. An auction will be held starting at 12:30 in the air-conditioned hall and there will be games for children. A raffle drawing will follow the auction. Angel Food Ministries Angel Food Ministries introduces new Senior Box Meals. Ten no sodium added, low fat, nutritionally balanced meals for only $25. That is only $2.50 per meal. AFM orders are due by Monday, Sept. 15 at noon. Distribution will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 8:30- 10 a.m. Regular boxes are still only $30 and there are 5 different specials that can be added this month. All proceeds will go to benefit the WJHS and WHS athletic programs including the WISD Strength and Fitness Center and scholarships for graduating seniors. BBQ cook-off The American Legion Post 87 and VFW Post 4474 is holding a BBQ Cook-off for Building Fund on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20 at the American Legion Grounds in Wharton. First place prize is $500 with second and third place receiving trophies. Checkin is Friday at noon with judging starting at noon on Saturday. Space are first come-first served. The entry fee is $75.
