Edna shuts out Dogs in scrimmage
Boling plays Sweeny in West Columbia Thursday

BOLING - Despite watching his team get shut out by Edna in Saturday morning's scrimmage, Boling coach Neal Majewski was optimistic about his team's performance.

The Cowboys scored three touchdowns, once in the controlled portion, and twice in live quarter before rains halted the action.

"We fared well," said Majewski. "Our effort was as high as I remember it in years past. I thought that the kids were working hard and going fast. I knew that we were going to make mistakes, and that's what a scrimmage is for - so we can identify them."

Majewski views a scrimmage as more of a learning experience than a tangible indicator of a team's potential and progress. He'll know what kind of team he has when the regular season starts.

"I'd much rather lose a scrimmage and win the first game," said Majewski.

Boling was able to move the ball during the first 15 plays, and picked up a few first downs before the drives stalled.

"The down and distance was never important to me," explained Majewski. "We got our plays in that we knew that we wanted to run. We were there to work on our stuff."

Boling's defense also played well in the controlled segment.

"We stepped up and forced them into some consecutive third down situations," said Majewski.

Dennis Hemphill and Kalin Ray had some big carries behind senior quarterback Justin Hobbs.

"They both ran the ball well, but we have to get better on the offensive line," said Majewski. "That's where some of our youth is and that's tougher sometimes."

Majewski also singled out Brandon Krushall and Jerail Spears.

"They both did a good job and were impressive," said Majewski.

Brahmas score Boling scrimmages at Class 3A Sweeny in West Columbia Thursday and Majewski wants to see some improvement.

"We want to take what we saw from this past scrimmage, take it to the next one and eliminate some mistakes," said Majewski.

The Bulldogs from Brazoria County will be Boling's second 3A opponent.

"It's no easy task, but I think our kids will be up for it,' said Majewski. "It's just fine tuning the things that we've been working on. We have to get more reps and more practice time, but we're definitely headed in the right direction."
