Honeymoon derived from the month best for honey harvest
The first full moon in June is called the "honey moon" and is considered the best time to harvest honey from the hives. Combine this with the popularity of June as a time for weddings, and you have the perfect month for honeymoons. Kimberley Monroe and Keith Wittig will join their lives on Saturday, July 5, at 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Wharton. Parents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. Gene Monroe Sr. Parents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. Herman Wittig. A reception will be held at the Wharton Community Civic Center. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Rasmussen Jr. are the parents of another brideto be Courtney Rasmussen, who will become the wife of Chad Thonsgaard on Saturday, June 28, at 4 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wharton. A reception will follow at the Wharton Community Civic Center. Another couple, who married 35 years ago, will be celebrate by reaffirming their vows on Saturday, June 28, at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Rosenberg. Janie and Robert Gonzales have found friendship, reared a family and built a beautiful marriage. Their children and grandchildren are hosting the ceremony. An invitation is required. Our most sincere congratulations to these three beautiful couples on their special days. June is also a time for graduations. The Wharton Lions Club awarded 15 scholarships for $400 each to 13 Wharton High School graduates, one in Boling graduate and one in East Bernard graduate. They are Debra Barnes, Bennie Enriquez, Shea Flynn, Brittany Gutierrez, Kimberly Janik, Sharneace Johnson, Kole Kubicek, Desurae Matthews, Katie Ondrias, Robert Washington, Ben Williams, Blaire Zahn and Hannah Mann, who was the recipient of the George Brady Memorial. Also getting scholarships are Camille Johse, a Boling graduate, and Shelly Atherton, an East Bernard graduate. Best wishes in their future studies to each one of the graduates. Rev. Bryan Heyer has been assigned to Our Lady of the Gulf in Port Lavaca, Rev. Gabriel Espinosa of Shiner, will be assigned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 1. There will be a reception next Wednesday for Rev. Bryan after the 6 p.m. Mass at the Family Life Center of Mount Carmel. Tommy Chen of St. Ann Parish in Point Comfort will be ordained to the priesthood today. Several people are carpooling to the ordination. They will leave Mount Carmel at 8 a.m. and return approximately by 2 p.m. Tommy is the son of Kun-Ming and Lucy Chen of Point Comfort. Last Saturday Rev. Bryan honored all fathers on Father's Day. Two were especially chosen, William Hanslik was the oldest father in church and Daniel Bilski as the youngest father. At the end of Mass, Rev. Bryan gave each one of them a rosary. Rev. John S. Broussard celebrates his 60th anniversary to the priesthood and Rev. Charles E. Lynch celebrates its 50th anniversary next Sunday at Sacred Heart Church in Manvel. Both priests who belong to the Basilian Fathers were in Wharton, most recently was Rev. Lynch who served along with Rev. Raymond Jackson. There will be a reception with a Mass on June 29 at 12:30 p.m. in Spanish and reception at 2 p.m. in the Parish Hall Sacred Heart Church in Manvel. For more information please call the rectory. Richmond, Sugar Land and Baytown are getting new zip codes. The new zip codes will go into effect July 1 but customers can still use their old ZIP codes for a year transition period. Gene and Janet Bartosh celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on June 14. Dr. Jon Snelling has retired and left Wharton. He and Bobbie will be moving to Kerrville where Bobbie will probably work. Their daughters are Casey, who works at UTMB, and Jamie, who will soon graduate from pharmacy school. Dr. Snelling told us he might be coming back to work in Wharton occassionally. We are going to miss him. Dr. Henry Lopez Roman and his family were in Nicaragua for 10 days. He said that all of his brothers and about 30 members of his family traveled home and had a wonderful vacation with their family, who live in Nicaragua. Two Whartonians, Billie Jones and Liz Montalvo, were asked their opinions on the ouestion of the day in the Victoria Advocate last Saturday: What do you think about the fire at the governor's mansion and the cost of repairs? On Flag Day American Legion members came to celebrate with senior residents. The sound of Taps was heard all through the building while much-needed rain fell outside. After the pledge, Lorna Kaiser, led the singing of patriotic songs. Everybody enjoyed refreshments and visiting. Jesse Cerrillo, Lloyd LaComb, Bill Hare, Raymond Tomcszak, Charles Briggs and Daisey Delgado looked very neat and impressive for the ceremony. We thank them for their patriotism. We have started a wall with pictures of immediate family members of the staff who are on active duty in the armed forces. The mariachi group of Mount Carmel is accepting beginner members Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon. Regular practice for all members is Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until noon. For more information contact the parish office at 532-3492. Holy Family is having its 20th annual Bazaar June 29. Barbecued pork steak and sausage and all the trimmings with iced tea is being sold in advance for $7 presale or $7.50 at the door. An auction begins at noon. There will be a country store, homemade bread, noodles, cookies and craft items, cake walk and plant walk with children's games and music by the Holy Family Czech Singers. Happy birthday to Sandy Valigura, Tammy Dotson, Celestine Kucera and Marie Vacek. Our grandaughter Helene Smith-Vaughan turns 20 today. She will be home from College Station, where she attends summer school. The Guerrero and Hernandez families have sent a beautiful invitation for a quinceanera for Brittany and Brianna's 15th birthday. They will have a ceremony celebrating their quince anos on July 12 at 3 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Boling. The grand march will take place at 7 p.m. followed by the dance at the Boling Community Center. Wilbert and Albina Hundl drove to Edmond, Okla., spent one night at the home of their children Wilbert Jr. and Paula and drove back to Texas with their granchildren Hayley, 8; Bradley, 9; and Wilbert III, 10. They spent a few days in Wharton with their grandparents and Sunday met their parents in Bryan for a family reunion. Wilbert and Albina returned to Wharton alone but had a great time. Have a great celebration. Congratulations to grandparents for the third time Barbara and Conrad Felix on the birth of Ryan Christopher Felix at GCMC on Thursday May 1. He is the first boy to the Felix family. Proud parents are Chris and Jenny Felix. He was welcomed home by older sister Kaitlyn Marie Felix. We thank the Chamber members, city officials, doctors Samuelson, Satterfield and Ortiz as well as the business community, volunteers and friends who came for the groundbreaking ceremony last Tuesday at the new site of Wharton Nursing.
