Ask Billie

Who decides what we do on special days? Who decided that our Annual Memorial Day should be a sale day? Isn't it strange that we receive tons of newspapers and hours of television commercials extolling this day of remembering as a day to spend money?

Those who have given their lives for our freedom should be honored in a better way. The least we can do is fly our flags and teach our children that freedom has not been free. Thousands who have died serving the people of the United States must not be forgotten.

The Capitol Steps Are Coming

The Board of Directors of Wharton County Junior College Foundation invites everyone to mark our calendars for Friday, Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. The place to be that evening is the Safari Texas Ranch & Ballroom located at 11627 FM 1464 in Richmond.

The Foundations Annual Gala Committee is offering us something entirely new and exciting. If you are tired of politics in the usual setting, get ready for an evening of laughter as the Capitol Steps take to the stage.

Capitol Steps is a Washington D.C. based comedy troupe entertaining with the lighter side of politics: being bipartisan, they equally spread their political satire and no one is left out. This fall of 2008 should be the perfect fit for fun from Washington.

In addition to 90 minutes of laughter, there will be a great gourmet dinner, a silent and live auction in a beautiful setting and much more. Silver and gold sponsorships are now available by calling WCJC or any of the Foundation Board members. Individual tickets will be available soon. More information will be coming our way, in the meantime place a big circle around Friday, Aug. 15. For those who do not want to drive out of town at night, let us know if you would like to have a bus available.

More WCJC news

For nine months out of the year the Fine Arts Department of Wharton County Junior College offers outstanding entertainment. This Department is well known around Texas for recruiting talented students in music and drama. While at WCJC they have the opportunity to further develop those talents under the fine faculty in the Division of Communications and Fine Arts.

We are all aware that higher education is expensive and we do have students who need financial assistance. This is where the Center for the Arts Scholarship Fund comes into play.

This is also the place where we as citizens can not only assist students, but we receive an annual Arts Series Subscription. This also means we present our card at the door and enjoy music, drama and many delightful evenings.

So the next question is "what is the cost?" There are three categories: Contributor to the Arts - $50; Friend of the Arts - $100; Patron of the Arts -$200 or more. Each category provides two tickets to each performance. These contributions are also tax-deductible and the 2008-2009 series will have all the contributors printed in the programs. As mentioned before, I have never been disappointed in an event at WCJC.
