Sounding Board Letter to the Editor: As we watch the news and hear of all the bad things people do, it is easy to lower our opinion of all humanity. A recent event made me realize how much good there still is out in the world. Our daughter was involved in a head on collision with an 18- wheeler on Monday, May 5 around 5:30 p.m. Her vehicle was clipped by another vehicle and spun across into the north bound lane of traffic. When she looked up, all she saw was the grill and windshield of the on-coming 18-wheeler. She was hit straight head on. The truck driver was a 20 year veteran and knew how to handle the rig to minimize the blow she would have to take. The truck was relatively new and had anti-lock air brakes. Another rig shielded her crumpled truck to prevent any other vehicles from slamming into it. Another trucker, who had first responder training, quickly came to her truck and helped calm our daughter down. She had momentarily lost her breath from the blow and was very frightened. He used his cell phone to call us and let us talk to her. We arrived at the scene at the same time the ambulance did. It was raining and cool. The driver covered her with his spare shirt while he got drenched in the rain. Everyone at the scene was so helpful and I am ashamed of myself for thinking that the whole world had such low morals. She is now home from the hospital and recovering. Thank you to all of the people who helped our daughter through the horrific wreck. Jackie Jurasek Wharton Newgulf road still dangerous Letter to the Editor: It's been almost three weeks since I addressed to Commissioner Mickey Reynolds the danger the Newgulf road poses to the people who commute on it, due to the fact it needs some work done on it. Spreading rocks on the pot holes didn't solve the problem. It just created another dangerous problem - flying rocks. These rocks can have the velocity of a bullet and shatter glass. Enough said. The approval of using rocks to fill the pot holes was in my view a political act to try and convince the citizens of Precinct 1 that an interest was taken in solving the problem. By the way, there's a hole farther down the road that they forgot to fill. Ray Rodriguez Boling A 'great place to eat' Letter to the Editor: I wanted to give credit where credit is due. I have been eating at the reopened Dairy Queen lately and want to express how awesome it is. The staff there is super friendly, the restaurant is always clean, and the service is quick. Thanks to new owner Pam for striving to such excellence. You and your staff really have given Wharton a great place to eat. Melanie Chumchal Wharton Lewis embraced, then |
