Brahmarettes sweep No. 1 ranked Franklin in area round playoffs
The Brahmarettes swept the 27-1 Lady Lions by 18-2 and 10-3 scores on Friday and Saturday to advance quarterfinal round of the playoff. "We knew that they were No. 1 so we had to play our hardest and we did," said EB junior shortstop Haley Dawson, who had a big two-run single in the second game. "That was on our minds the whole time during the week." EB totaled 12 hits in the first game and 10 more in the second. "Our bats did our job," said Dawson. I expected us to score a lot of runs." Franklin, the 26-2A champion, entered the series with a 27-1 record. "I don't think anybody thought we could beat this team except us," said EB coach Amy Bush. "I didn't know if we could sweep them but I knew we would go down fighting either way. I knew that we would hit the ball well and knew that they were going to have to make plays to beat us." "I told them that we were going to have to jump this hurdle first and this was going to be a big time win for us," said Bush. East Bernard will now play Rosebud Lott in one-game-take-all area game at 7 p.m. Friday in Smithville. "We're developing more as a team and are now very confident going into the rest of the playoffs," added Dawson. EB beat Franklin 4-3 in a one game area round contest last year and then lost two games to eventual state champion Troy in the quarterfinal round. The Lady Cougars upset Hallettsville 7-3 last Friday in a area round game in Bastrop. The winner advances to the regional quarterfinal of the playoffs against the winner of the Yorktown-Dilley area contest. In the bottom of the bracket, District 27-2A champion Danbury plays Lago Vista in three game series which starts Thursday in Brenham. Poth plays George West in the other series. Bush said her players had to put the wins behind them to prepare for the Lady Cougars. "I told the kids we could celebrate for 36 hours and then hit the ground running on Monday," said Bush. On Saturday, EB jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Liz Reyes led off with a single and went to second on a ground ball by Sam Wasek. She scored on a two-out single by Repka. Franklin tied the game in the second when Hannah Hancock singled and came around to score when a ground ball by Amanda Ellison was misplayed. EB answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 3-1. With one out, Brittney Wilcox reached on a fielding error. With two down, Anna Giannetti and Reyes singled to load the bases. Dawson followed with a two-run single. Franklin made it a one run game in the top of the third. Kaycee Walker singled and later scored wild pitch. The Brahmarettes exploded for six runs in the fourth to go up 9-2. Wilcox walked, Kubes reached on a fielder's choice and Giannetti reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Reyes followed with an RBI single and Kubes scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by Dawson. Wasek followed with a two-run bloop single After Repka walked to re-load the bases, Ashley Miculka took second as a courtesy runner. Amber Kieler drew a free pass and Dawson scored. Wasek then scored on a fielders choice ground ball by Lopez and Wilcox followed with a RBI single to complete the scoring EB made it 10-2 in the fifth. Reyes led off with a walk and later came around to score on a throwing error. Franklin picked up its final run in the top of the seventh. Repka didn't appear to have her best stuff in the circle and got out of couple early jams. "She didn't feel good tonight and for her to step on the mound and compete the way she did says a lot about Courtney," Bush said. Repka gave up two hits, walking one and hitting one while striking out seven batters. "What that says about the rest of the kids on this team and how strong that they are, and to step up and hit the ball they way they did," said Bush. |
