WHS speech team has strong year, send two to UIL state meet
      Wharton High School's Speech Team has had a good run this year. Under the leadership of instructor Blake Hamman, the students have competed in a number of tournaments this year.

Boling seniors hold first senior serve to raise graduation funds

      The Boling Community Center shined for the Boling Senior Serve. It was full of proud parents, friends and family members. Tables were decorated with a theme for each senior. Since Camille Johse rodeos, the china and silverware as well as the napkins were all rodeo theme. It was very nice.

Swing Riders at book review club May 12
      The Wharton Book Review Club will meet in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church Monday, May 12, at 10 a.m. The program will feature Swing Riders with Mike and Doc Blakely. A catered lunch will follow at 11:30 a.m. and is included in the ticket price of $15.

Blakely plays at Plaza on May 10
      Plaza Live presents Mike Blakely May 10 at the Plaza Theatre on the Square in Wharton. Blakely, who grew up in Wharton, is not only a singer/ songwriter but also an awardwinning novelist. Floating classroom has two cruises today
      Today Texas A&M University's Floating Classroom Program (FCP) will host two public nature discovery cruises of the inshore coastal waters of the East Matagorda Bay area aboard the R/V Karma, its 57-foot teaching and research vessel.

EB athletes honored at banquet May 13
      The East Bernard Athletic Booster Club All Sports Banquet will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, at the American Legion Hall. Dinner tickets are $8 and consist of a chicken fried steak meal plus trimmings with serving beginning at 6:30 pm.

      The Wharton County Junior College Music Department will present two Music Major Recitals. On Monday, May 5, there will be a Freshman/Sophomore Recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Horton Foote Theater. Then on Tuesday, May 6, there will be a Sophomore Recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Horton Foote Theatre.

DAR chapter sees WW II warbirds
      The Comfort Wood Chapter, DAR traveled to Victoria on April 1 to the Gulf Coast Regent's Council for Texas DAR. The meeting and luncheon were held at the Sky Restaurant in the airport there.
