Wharton doubles teams qualify for state tennis tourney BRYAN - Four members of the Wharton's tennis team will represent the school at this year's Class 3A State Tournament on May 5 at Penick- Alison Courts on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin. The Wharton girls doubles team of Christie Viktorin and Ashley Aaronson won the regional championship with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over a Bellville team. Viktorin and Aaronson won their first round match 6-2, 6-1 and won their second round match 6-3, 7-5. The mixed doubles team of Ric Doestch and Rachel Gubbels finished second after beating Groesbeck team 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in a playback match. They won their first round match 6-1, 6-2, won their second round match 6-0, 6-0 but lost their third round match 6-0, 6-3. Wharton's girls doubles team of Jessica Kainer and Paige Bahnsen finished third after beating a Bellville team 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. They won their first match 6-1, 6-2 and lost their second round match 6-0, 6-1. In boys doubles, Chris Feyen and Ryan McMicken lost their opening match to a team from Liberty Hill 6-2, 6-2, In girls singles, Kimberly Janik finished fourth. She won their first match 6-2, 7-5, won her second match 6-4, 6-2; lost her third match 6-0, 6-0 and lost her fourth match 6-4, 6-0. "I'm proud of all the kids efforts," said Wharton coach Shauna Eller. "I thought that all of them competed hard and represented Wharton in a very positive way." "We are also excited to get the opportunity to continue our season in Austin. "If we play well, who knows, we might be able to bring home some state medals." |
