Marie Kosik

Marie Elizabeth Lepik Kosik departed this life on April 24, 2008 following an extended illness. She went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and to be reunited with her loved ones who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Kosik was born on Aug. 31, 1918 to Jaromir and Alzabeta Orsak Lepik in Moravia, Lavaca County. The family moved to a farm outside of Hungerford about 1928. She was the oldest of four children and was very quickly thrown into the responsibility of caring for home and family when her mother passed away in 1936.

Mrs. Kosik met and married John Vancel Kosik on Nov. 6, 1939. Their married life was interrupted when John left to serve his country during World War II. Marie continued her work caring for her father, brother and sisters. She was a devoted caregiver to her dad, who remained in her home until his death in 1976.

The couple spent their married life farming outside of Hungerford. She was a devoted farmer's wife, enjoying her flower beds and garden, canning and preserving the fruits of her labors, raising chickens, sewing and quilting.

Mrs. Kosik was a great cook and the aroma of her kolaches, cakes and pies would fill her home. She especially enjoyed fishing with John.

There was a well worn path to the creek behind her home, but her favorite may have been leaving in the early morning hours going to Matagorda or Chinquapin, getting there in time to watch the sun come up over her first cast.

Never having any children of their own, the couple entertained numerous nieces and nephews who would come to the farm to spend time hunting, fishing and experiencing the farming life and the hospitality of Aunt Marie.

Unfortunately, John passed away suddenly on July 25, 1985. Also preceding her in death were her brother, Jerome Vancer Lepik; sister-in-law, Joyce Wheeler Lepik; brother-in-law, Joe Talafuse Sr.; and a beloved niece, Diana Talafuse Mitchell.

Mrs. Kosik was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Hungerford.

Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. at St. John's on Sunday, April 27, 2008 with the rosary following at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. John's Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 28, 2008 with Rev. Henry C. Rachunek officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton, next to her husband John.

Pallbearers will be nephews Ed Zahradnik, Jerome Zahradnik, Robert Zahradnik, Michael Zahradnik, Joe Talafuse Jr., Mike Glasser, Jerry Kosik and Glenn Kosik.

She is survived by her sisters, Lillie Lepik Talafuse of East Bernard and Emilie Lepik Zahradnik and her husband Emil J. Zahradnik Sr. of Hungerford, numerous nieces and nephews, their spouses, and their children and many other relatives and friends who loved her and will miss her greatly.

She will especially be missed by the staff and residents of Pecan Village Apartments, formerly the University Place Apartments, where she was a resident for almost 20 years and a friend to many.

Special thanks to the staff of Wharton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the excellent care, consideration and kindness she was shown during the last weeks of her life.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John's Catholic Church in Hungerford.
