SEALY - Wharton remained in the District 24-3A baseball playoff race by beating Sealy 5-3 Friday night.
"It was a tough baseball game to win," said Wharton coach Floyd Ciruti.
The Tigers from Wharton county improved to 7-5 and hosted winless Royal Tuesday night. Sealy slipped to 7-5 and battled Columbus, which had the same record, last night.
League-leading Sweeny beat Columbia 12-5 to improved to improve to 11-1 and clinched a playoff spot in the process.
Second place Needville, after losing to the Cardinals 3-2, was 9-3 before playing the Bulldogs.
Wharton closes out it's district schedule on Friday, playing at Columbia, which was 3-9 before taking on 4-8 Stafford last night
Also coming up on Friday, Columbus plays Royal in Brookshire, Sealy hosts Needville and Stafford hosts Sweeny.
After Friday's games, Wharton could find it's self in a three-way tie for the third and final playoff spot with Columbus and Sealy
If that's the case there would be a mini-tournament the Monday following the district season.
"We have to win and we can't stub our toe on either game," said Ciruti referring to Royal and Columbia.
"If we win on Tuesday and Sealy takes beats Columbus, we win our game on Friday and Needville beats Sealy, we're in. On paper we should win but our team and I know that we have to play. It doesn't matter what the other teams record is. In high school baseball if you don't show up ready to play, they have a good chance to win."
Michael Mata went the distance in Friday's game against Sealy. He tossed a three-hitter and struck out 10, walking only three.
Chris Acuna was two for three with a an RBI and double. He also scored two runs.
Wharton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
J.D. Rivera led off with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Acuna.
Acuna went to third on passed ball and scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by Kris Looper.
Sealy came back to tie the score in the bottom of the second.
The Tigers answered with three runs in the top of the third to go up 5- 2.
Acuna led off with a walk and Looper singled. Acuna scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by Brian Cervenka who reached first on the play. A squeeze bunt by Taylor Ustynik scored Looper and David Horta followed with an RBI single.
Sealy scored it's final run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 5-3 game.
