Tiger JV wins over Columbus Wharton's junior varsity baseball team has been involved in four one- run decisions this year and last Friday night was no different. Wharton battled Columbus at Tiger Field determined to sweep the Cardinals in district play this year. They did just that, winning a 5-4 battle in front of the Wharton faithful. With the Tigers trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the drama began to unfold. Tiger Ryan Sanchez led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Tiger designated hitter Zach Freese singled to right field scoring Sanchez from second, making the score 4-3. Joey Jackson came in to pinch-run for Freese and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tiger leadoff hitter Adam Garza. With two outs and Jackson on third, Tiger catcher Christian Krushall laced a single into left field to tie the game at 4-4. This brought Tiger first baseman Justin Sherrill, who had connected for his third home run of the year earlier in the game, to the plate. Sherrill didn't waste anytime and hit a shot down the left field line on the first pitch he saw. The ball skipped past the Columbus left fielder, hit the fence and ricocheted towards foul territory. Sherrill's hit allowed Krushall to score all the way from first and earned the Tigers a come from behind 5-4 victory. The win left the Tigers with a 5-4-1 district record heading into Tuesday's road game against Needville. Wharton hosts Sealy on Friday. |
