Tigers still in 24 -3A playoff race
Wharton baseball team clips Cardinals wings 8-4

Wharton's remained in the District 24-2A playoff race after beating Columbus 8-4 Friday night at Tiger Field.
The Tigers improved to 5-5 and battled 9-1 Needville Tuesday night. The Jays beat Stafford 11-1.
Sweeny entered last's night game against Columbus at 9-1 and the Cardinals were 6-4. Sealy, which beat Royal 13-1, was 6-4 before playing the 3-7 Spartans.
"We need to win four more games to give us a chance be in the playoffs," said Wharton coach Floyd Ciruti.
"It would be tough if we finish with six losses in district."
Kris Looper was two for three with a three-run home run. Michael Mata was two for four with a solo home run and two RBIs. J.D. Rivera was one for two with two RBIs.
All of Wharton's runs came on two out rallies
"We played a solid ball game and got some runs," said Ciruti. "We also made some good defensive plays
Michael Mata started on the mound and went the distance to pick up the win. He gave up four runs on six hits while striking out six and walking two. Columbus jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and Wharton tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Looper walked with two outs and scored on a double by Mata.
The Tigers picked up two runs in the second to go up 3-1.
Horta singled with two outs and Robert Herrera walked. Both moved up on wild pitch. Horta scored on a sacrifice fly by J. D. Rivera. Herrera then scored on a passed ball
Wharton extended it's lead to 8-1 with five runs in the sixth.
Ben Williams reached on an infield single with two outs. He scored on a double by Rivera. Acuna singled and Looper homered high over the centerfield fence. Mata then jacked a homer run over the right field fence.
The Cardinals came back in the seventh inning to close the gap to 8-4.
Coming up Friday, Wharton plays at Sealy. Columbia hosts Sweeny, Stafford plays Royal in Brookshire and Needville hosts Columbus.
