Sounding Board Regarding 'selective' justice Letter to the Editor: What kind of backwoods justice system are we running here anyway? I am so sorry that the Mendoza family has lost a loved one but it is so unfortunate for all parties that the trial was held here in Wharton. The truth of the matter is that the life of minorities are not valued here unless they are part of the "system." I believe that had Mendoza been a regular citizen like you and I, the trial would not have had the same result. The common man has no knowledge of the fact that Mendoza's vehicle was auctioned off way before the trial had been conducted. Is it just me or don't we call that evidence? What about the black box? Is this not "common sense" Mr. McCown? It doesn't matter what the three eyewitnesses said regarding the high speed that the officer was driving. We have learned that eyewitness testimony here in Wharton means absolutely nothing. The justice system gives a new meaning to a "fair trial." I only wished that it had been conducted somewhere else so there wouldn't be any questions in the integrity of the trial. If only Paniagua been born Segrest or Neilsen or maybe Polak, he'd be a free man in a few years if that. My intentions are not to seem insensitive to the Mendoza family. It is just important that they know that the minority community does not trust the system here. We have been dealt blow after blow with selective justice. Jessica Avalos Wharton Week of the Young Child Letter to the Editor: Young children in our communities deserve the best that we can give them. Week of the Young Child, held April 13-19, is a time to recognize the needs of young children, and thank the adults involved in their education and care. Parents, teachers, caregivers and other adults play important roles in the lives of young children, and Week of the Young Child celebrates their efforts. We can show our support for early learning in our community by promoting early literacy programs, thanking teachers who care for our children, and working to ensure that our public policies support early learning for all young children. Week of the Young Child is a time to focus our attention on bringing communities together for children. Valerie R. The work is stressful, but oh so necessary in our modern-day lives. C.J. Hobbs Wharton |
