Laurence Morgan

Laurence C. Morgan, age 95, of Wharton, died Friday, April 11, 2008 in Wharton following a brief illness. He was born on Jan. 22, 1913 in Waco, the son of the late Edward Morgan and Preshia Hopson Morgan.

Mr. Morgan had been a resident of Wharton since 1949. He was a graduate of Southwestern University and was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army.

He married Margaret Kriegel on Jan. 4, 1941 in Wharton. Mr. Morgan worked with the Rugeley Blasingame Clinic as credit manager from 1949 until 1961. In 1961 he joined Gulf Coast Medical Center as business manager and was then appointed hospital administrator and served in that position until his retirement in 1980. Mr. Morgan was a member of First United Methodist Church in Wharton and served on numerous boards and committees including The Methodist Men. He was active in the Boy Scouts serving as Scout Master for Troop No. 536 at the Methodist Church in Wharton. After his retirement he enjoyed farming, ranching and woodworking.

Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Edward Briggs Morgan.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2008 at First United Methodist Church in Wharton with Rev. Paul Quiggins officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Morgan of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Ginger Morgan of Wharton and Charles and Wendy Morgan of Austin; grandchildren, Matt Morgan, Melissa Morgan, Mary Martha Morgan and Howard Morgan.

Pallbearers were Dr. Garland Novosad, George Ray Guttenberger, Preston Schultz, Matt Morgan, Howard Morgan and Ronnie Wittig.

Honorary Pallbearers were Tim Barker and former members of the Boy Scouts Troop No. 536. Memorials may be sent to the Boy Scouts of America, c/o Sam Houston Area Council, P.O. Box 924528, Houston, TX 77292.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
