Tiger golf team finishes fifth in 24-3A tourney SAN FELIPE - The Wharton boys golf team finished fifth in the District 24-3A Tournament, completed Tuesday afternoon at the Stephen F. Austin Club. The tournament started on Monday. Columbus took the championship with a two-day, 36-hole total of 676. Sweeny was second with a 689 to also qualify for the Region III, Class 3A tournament later in the month. Columbia was third with a 719, Needville was fourth with a 738 and the Tigers recorded a 750. Columbus' Steward Beaird fired a 147 to earned first place medalist honors. Sweeny's Kenneth Setzer shot a 149 to finished second. Columbus' Daniel Heger and West Columbia's Jake May- tied for third with a 161 score. Mayfield's teammate Colling Golightly shot a 169 to round out the top five regional qualifiers. For Wharton, Drew Folmar shot a 182 and ranked 11th overall. Zach Freese recorded 186 and ranked 14th. Adam Garcia shot a194, Robert Washington shot a 196 and Brent Jansky shot a 206. In the girls tournament, Wharton didn't field a complete team Shea Flynn shot a 228 and it ranked 11th. Lauren Macha shot a 283. Sealy took the tournament championship with a 809, Columbus was second with a 826, Columbia was third with an 887 and Sweeny was fourth with a 997. |
