Ed Coufal

Ed Coufal, age 81 of Wharton died Thursday morning, April 10, 2008 in the V.A. Medical Center in Houston following an extended illness. He was born on Aug. 4, 1926 in Beasley, the son of the late Frank Coufal and Kristina Parencia Coufal.

Mr. Coufal was a resident of Wharton since 1946 and a former resident of Caldwell. He was a graduate of Caldwell High School. He was Christian by Faith. Mr. Coufal moved to Wharton in 1946 after serving in the U. S. Army during World War II. After moving to Wharton he was a farmer and then worked for the Texas Highway Department and later for Gilbert's Sport Shop. In 1964 he opened Ed's Motor shop and was active in his business until his retirement in 1994. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 87 in Wharton, the V.F.W. and the Disabled American Veterans. During World War II he was awarded the Medal of Victory, the Good Conduct Medal, an Honorable Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal along with a Sharp Shooter Medal. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Annie Coufal Sabrsula; brothers, Frank, John, Henry, Walter and Marvin Coufal; and a great grandson, Weston Machart.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Sherrill Speer officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Clay Garner of El Campo; son, Terry Coufal of Rockport; grandchildren and spouses, Rachel Sanders and husband James and Steven Miller and spouse Nancy, all of El Campo, and Cody Coufal of Wharton; great-grandchildren, Brendon Miller, Karli Miller and Celeste Sanders.

Pallbearers will be James Sanders, Steven Miller, Ronnie Berberich, James Kostka,

Edward Tydlacka and David Tydlacka.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
