Public request leads to reinstatement of feature on listing of county marriage licenses, divorces

After disappearing from the pages of the Wharton Journal- Spectator, East Bernard Express and the El Campo Leader-News for more than a year, and after several requests for its return, your newspapers will again offer as a regular feature a listing of Wharton County marriage licenses filed for, and divorces granted.

The plan is to publish this information each Saturday in Wharton and El Campo, and in Thursday's Express.

Today's story includes records filed in March.

By coincidence, the Leader- News received an unsigned letter to the editor this week asking for the return of this information, which is obtained courtesy of the Wharton County district clerk and county clerk.

"I've been taking the Leader- News a long time and can't wait to get it, Wednesday and Saturday. One thing missing in it is the court news.

"I'm a nosey old woman and would like to see whose getting married and whose getting divorced.

"What else is an old woman got to do but to be nosey?"

This "nosey old woman" concluded her letter by writing, "I know you won't put it in your paper, but I tried."

In reality, plans have been in the works for the last month to return this information to the pages of Wharton County's three newspapers.

We are pleased to start it today, and in East Bernard on Thursday.

The feature will not include divorces filed, only divorces granted.
