Pioneers complete sweep of Galveston College

WCJC completed its sweep of Galveston College Saturday at Tiger Field.

The Pioneers won the doubleheader by 5-4 and 11-4 scores. WCJC won the first game of the series on Wednesday.

The three wins left third place WCJC with a 13-8 record in the South Zone of the Region XIV Standings.

The last place Whitecaps slipped to 3-18.

League-leading Alvin split a doubleheader with second place San Jacinto on Saturday. The Dolphins are 17-4 and the Gators are 16-5.

WCJC starts a three-game series at Tiger Field tonight against fifth place Blinn, which swept Laredo to improve to 7-14. The Palominos have the same record.

Trey Ross pitched the first seven innings of Saturday's opener. He gave up four runs and seven hits, striking out nine. Zach Weyland finished the game and gave up only one hit.

WCJC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Center fielder Billy Hicks led off with a single and went to second on a hit by shortstop Alex Johnson. After first baseman Reno Malay was retired, third baseman Cody Ross singled home Hicks.

Galveston tied the game in the third when Mike Webb doubled and scored on another double by Andrew Whittington.

WCJC answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to go up 2-1.

Johnson singled with one out and later scored on a double by Ross.

The Pioneers made it 3-1 in the fourth when designated hitter Daniel Meyer singled and later scored on a hit by catcher John Davis.

The Whitecaps brought the score to 3-2 in the fifth. Webb singled and later came around to score.

But WCJC went up by two again in the bottom of the inning.

Hicks doubled and scored on a two-out single by Ross.

The Whitecaps tied the score in the seventh.

Whittington reached on an infield single and Warren Demoskoff homered. WCJC took a 5-4 lead in the extra inning eight.

Ross reached on an error with one out and went to third on a single by second baseman Bryan Mizenmeyer. With one out, Meyer singled home Ross for the win.

Jacob Liedka pitched the second game and went seven innings. He gave up four runs on nine hits and struck out two. Mike Clark finished the game and struck out two.

WCJC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Malay doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Ross.

Galveston picked up three runs in the fourth to go up 3-1.

John Baudry singled with one out and Andrew Dewey walked. Aaron Buchanan singled home Baudry.

Webb reached on a fielder's choice ground ball and Camp followed with a two-run single.

The Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Ross singled and Minzenmeyer homered.

The Whitecaps went up 4-3 in the fifth when Scott Pasket homered.

WCJC answered back with five runs in the bottom half to go up 8-4.

Hicks led off with a walk. After Johnson and Malay were retired, Ross and Minzenmeyer walked to load the bases.

Ansley crushed the ball over the fence for a grand slam.

Meyer followed with a single, Wharton graduate Jordan Calhoun walked and Austin Kent drew a free pass to load the bases.

Hicks the walked to force home Meyer.

The Pioneers padded their lead to 11-4 with three runs in the sixth.

Johnson doubled and Malay walked. Malay was erased on a fielder's choice ground ball by Ross and Mizenmeyer homered.
