Tiger JV claims 6-5 district win over Stafford

Wharton's junior varsity baseball team won a tight contest 6-5 over Stafford Saturday afternoon.

Tiger pitcher O.J. Esquivel threw six strong innings but received a 'nodecision' as the game was tied 5-5 when he left the mound.

The Tigers rallied for a run in the top of the seventh thanks to some crafty baserunning and timely hitting. Freshman David Zaskoda came in to shut the door on the Spartans in the last half of the seventh inning.

The Spartans made it interesting and had a man reach third base in the inning but Adam Garza made a great defensive play at shortstop and threw the ball to the plate where Tiger catcher Kris Kubecka applied the tag and ended the Spartans attempt at tying the game.

The win puts the Tigers at 8-7-1 for the season. The team played Sweeny on Tuesday and hosts Columbus on Friday.
