Brahmas win 27-2A track championship WALLIS - East Bernard boys track team broke a long drought and captured the District 27-2A Track and Field Championships, which were completed Monday at Cougar Stadium on the campus of Brazos High School. The Brahmas totaled up 152 1/2 points to beat out second place Van Vleck who finished with 149 points. Host Brazos was third with 140 1/2 points. Hitchcock was fourth with 96 points, Danbury was fifth with 31 points, Boling was sixth with 27 points and Milburn Academy was seventh with eight points. The difference in point standings came in the 1,600-meter relay when the East Bernard foursome of Jontee Goff, Matt Stelzel, Patrick Pitts and Mike Hayes finished third with a 3:34.32. Van Vleck was fourth with a 3:38.51. Through last Thursday's field events and 3,200-meter run Van Vleck was on top with 75 points. The Brahmas were second with 62.5 points. Brazos was third with 38.5 points, Hitchcock was fourth with 31 points, Boling was fifth with five points, Danbury was sixth with two points. Winners, along with second and third place finishers, earned the right to compete at the Region XIV Championships April 25-26 at Texas State University in San Marcos. Earlier on Monday, the East Bernard 400-meter relay team of Goff, Martin Hayes, Chris Plunkett and Lance Crump finished third with a 45.55 to qualify for regional. The 800-meter relay team of Goff, Crump, Martin Hayes and Mike Hayes finished third with an 1:33.61. In individual running events, Miles Locke finished third in the 800-meter run with a 2:08.29. Zach Sprague was fifth with a 2:09.32. Mike Hayes won the 100-meter dash with an 11.15. He had a 10.53 time in Thursday's prelims. Matt Stelzel won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a 40.43 and he finished second in the 110-meter hurdles with a 16.14. Nick Guerra finished third in the 1,600-meter run with a 4:55.52. Zach Sprague was fourth with a 4:58.17 and Locke was fifth with a 5:02.48. In Thursday's events, Brahma Nick Guerra finished third in the 3,200-meter run with a 10:38.23. Patrick Pitts finished fourth with a 11:06.12. Brazos' Patrick Kroll won the race with a 10:32.13 and Cougar Mosses Romo was second with a 10:37.59. In field events, Cameron Mazoch won the pole vault competition with a 12-foot clearance of the bar. A total of five cleared the height with Brahma Chris Plunkett taking second and Boling freshman Brent Stidevent taking fifth based on misses. Brahma Martin Hayes won the high jump with a 5-foot, 8-inch effort. EB's Bryce Koenig also cleared that height but placed second on number of misses. East Bernard's Adam Kubena finished third in the shot put with a 46- 0.5 toss to qualify for regional. Gabe Segrest finished second in the discus with a 128-1 throw to qualify. B.W. McLeod was Boling's lone regional qualifier after finishing third in the 200-meter dash with a 22.94 to qualify for regionals. Freshman Brent Stidevent finished fourth in the 800- meter dash with a 2:08.48. The Boling 800-meter relay team of Quincey Martin, Stidevent, Trevor Archer and McLeod finished fourth with a 1:37.06. |
