Tennis teams win 24-3A crowns again WEST COLUMBIA - Wharton's boys and girls tennis teams captured their eighth straight District 24-3A Tournament championship Friday at Columbia Lakes. The girls team totaled 40 points. Columbia was second with 22 points and Sweeny was third with eight points. The boys team finished with 26 points. Sealy was second with 18 points and Needville was third with eight points. "This was quite an accomplishment for us," said Wharton coach Robyn Eller. "We are very proud of this streak and the kids really stepped up to keep it going. "On the varsity level, we really struggled the first day," Eller continued. "But on the second, we really went out and competed. I am especially proud of the boys team. "They went out and took it to Columbia on the second day." The top two finishers in each division advanced to the Region III, Class 3A Tournament in two weeks at Bryan. In girls singles, Kim Janik won her first match 6-1, 6-1, won her second match 6-0 6-0, won her third match 6-3, 6-3 and lost in the championship match 6-4, 6-7, 6-0. In a play back match on Monday, Janik beat Wharton's Meagan Lesak 6-3, 6-3 to earn a regional berth. Lesak won her first match 6-0, 6-2, won her second match 6-1, 6-1, lost her third match 6-4, 6-4 and won her fourth match 7-6, 7-5. In boys singles, Sylvester Mayfield finished fourth. He won his first match 6-2, 6-0, won his second match 6-0, 6-0, lost his third match 6-1, 7-5 and lost his fourth match 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. In another boys singles match, Manesha Perra lost his match 6-7, 7-5, 6-3. In boys doubles action, the Wharton team of Ryan McMicken and Chris Feyen finished second to advance to the regional tournament. They won their first round match 6-3, 6-0. won their second round match 6-3, 6-2 and lost in the championship match 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. The boys doubles team of Calvin Boehm and Patrick Tulley finished third. They won their first match 6-2, 6-1, lost their second match 6-0, 6-1, won their third match 7-5, 6-2 and lost to Feyen and McMicken 6-2, 6-3 in a playback match. In boys doubles, Chris Feyen and Ryan McMicken lost their second round match by 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 scores. The girls doubles team of Ashley Aaronson and Christie Viktorin beat classmates Jessica Kainer and Paige Bahnsen 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 for the championship. Aaronson and Viktorin won their first match 6-0, 6-0 and won their second match 6-1, 6-0 Bahnsen and Kainer won their first match 6-0, 6-0 and won their second match 7-5, 6-1. The mixed doubles team of Ric Doetsch and Rachel Gubbels won 6-1, 6-2 to take first. They won their first match 6-1, 6-0, won their second match 7-6, 6-3 and won their third match 6-1, 6-2. And the mixed doubles team of Ethan Massey and Rachel Gubbels finished third. They won their first match 6-0, 6-2, lost their second match 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 and won their third match 6-2, 6-3. |
