Tigers still in 24-3A playoff hunt

      STAFFORD - Wharton remained in the District 24-3A baseball race after beating Stafford 10-7 Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field. The game was originally scheduled for Friday but postponed because of rain. The Tigers evened their district record to 4-4 and hosted 7-1 Sweeny Tuesday night.

Tennis teams win 24-3A crowns again

      WEST COLUMBIA - Wharton's boys and girls tennis teams captured their eighth straight District 24-3A Tournament championship Friday at Columbia Lakes. The girls team totaled 40 points. Columbia was second with 22 points and Sweeny was third with eight points.

Wharton boys qualify for regional track meet

      COLUMBUS - Two Wharton boys relay teams and a hurdler earned a trip to the Region III Class 3A Championships at Humble in two weeks. They qualified by winning or placing second or third in Saturday's District 24-3A running finals at Cardinal Stadium on the campus of Columbus High School.

Brahmas win 27-2A track championship
      WALLIS - East Bernard boys track team broke a long drought and captured the District 27-2A Track and Field Championships, which were completed Monday at Cougar Stadium on the campus of Brazos High School. Tiger JV claims 6-5 district win over Stafford
      Wharton's junior varsity baseball team won a tight contest 6-5 over Stafford Saturday afternoon. Tiger pitcher O.J. Esquivel threw six strong innings but received a 'nodecision' as the game was tied 5-5 when he left the mound.

      In Saturday's Journal-Spectator it was reported that Erich Jaquez was the freshman pitcher against Columbia on April 1. Instead it was Craig Jaquez who pitched for the Tigers. The Journal-Spectator regrets any confusion this error may have caused.

Wharton JV, Frosh tennis teams win District 24-3A tournaments
      COLUMBIA - The Wharton's junior varsity and freshman boys and girls teams also captured district titles at Columbia Lakes last Thursday. The boys team totaled 33 points. Pearland Dawson was second with 18 points and Stafford was third with six points.

East Bernard to host lift-a-thon on Thursday
      The East Bernard Athletic Department will hold its annual off-season lift-a-thon at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the old gymnasium. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors will max out in the bench press. Athletes are securing sponsors to raise funds for the project.

Pioneers complete sweep of Galveston College

      WCJC completed its sweep of Galveston College Saturday at Tiger Field. The Pioneers won the doubleheader by 5-4 and 11-4 scores. WCJC won the first game of the series on Wednesday. The three wins left third place WCJC with a 13-8 record in the South Zone of the Region XIV Standings.

Brahmas dealt 7-1 district loss by Danbury
      DANBURY - East Bernard dug themselves a hole early and couldn't climb out of it against the District 27-2A leading Danbury Saturday afternoon at Panther Field. Danbury scored two runs in the first and three runs in the third to build a 5-0 lead and finished with a 7-1 win.
