WC Retired Teachers meet Jeanell Taylor of the Wharton County Retired Teachers Scholarship Committee announced that the organization would be able to give two $400 scholarships. The scholarship is available to a student attending Wharton County Junior College pursuing a degree in education. Funds for the scholarship are attained by members purchasing items at the silent auction at the meetings, as well as individuals making donations in memory or honor of a member. This and other business was taken care of as the group met on April 2 at Christ Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in El Campo. President Henriette Jalowy presided. Jeannette Macha, Walk a Million Steps chairman, continued the journey across the U.S. by recording the members' steps. She moved the group through 11 cities from Nebraska through Nevada. She gave handouts of the sights seen along the way. Janet Marek, historian, passed around a copy of the scrapbook pages she mailed to the state office to be included in a state scrapbook. The group agreed to give loose change each meeting as an additional fundraiser. Dr. Laurie Hulsman of El Campo presented a program on arthritis in men and women. She provided information on gout, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. She provided a handouts on exercises and a web site for additional information. President Jalowy reminded that members approved at the March meeting an increase in local dues to $10. The state convention will be in El Paso, April 15 to 17. The spring leadership meeting will be at the Bay City Service Center Wednesday, April 30. The fall convention will be in El Campo in the Christ Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall Wednesday, Oct. 1. The next meeting of the Wharton County Retired Teachers will be in Wharton at the Wharton County Museum on June 4. |
