Out-of-towners need to hear positive words We receive out-of-town company to our town all the time. First stop for visitors is often the Chamber of Commerce office. It is our job, a job we take very very seriously, to put our town's best foot forward. We bend over backwards to ensure all their questions are answered, that they know all the interesting things to see and do here. Often, they have already heard of us, of our museums, our antique shops, our gift shops, our motels and bread and breakfasts, our dinosaur, and our historic courthouse and downtown, among others. Our job is to do our best to ensure that their experience meets their expectations. But we are not the only place they will stop for information. They gather a sense of who we are from every business establishment they enter. Every business in Wharton is also an ambassador for our town. A traveler asks, "What is there to do in Wharton?" The answer is a laugh and then, "nothing." How can we expect that traveler to believe we are worth his money, if he hears something like that? And it happens, folks. Familiarity does breed contempt, but please believe we are a breath of fresh air and music to the eyes of city dwellers, who just love our wide open and historic spaces and spend their money! They are not all just travelers. It could be a developer, a complete stranger, interested in sinking millions into our community for housing and jobs. And he or she could base his complete impression on us based on casual conversation. If you tell him we are unworthy, he just might believe it. But we are worthy. Believe it. |
