Tigers qualify for regional track meet

COLUMBUS - Four Wharton boys earned the right to compete at the Region III Class 3A Track and Field Championships later this month.

They advanced by either winning or finishing second or third in the District 25-3A field events Wednesday at Cardinal Stadium on the campus of Columbus High School.

Keemon Jones won the long jump competition with a 21-0 effort. Tyrik Dickerson was fifth with a 20-5.5 attempt.

Chris Owens won the shot put with a 51-4 toss. Raymond Felder finished third in the discus with a 123-3 throw.

Chris Taylor finished third in the triple jump with a 41-11.5 effort.

Dustin Lewis was sixth in the high jump with a 5-10 clearance of the bar.

The running finals, beginning with the girls 400-meter relay, crank up at 1 p.m. today.

Point total through field events and the 3,200-meter run left Sealy in first place with 46 points.

Wharton is in second with 37 points. Sweeny is third with 35 points, Needville and Royal were tied for fourth with 25 points. Columbia was sixth with 16 points, Columbus was seventh with 11 points and Pearland Dawson was ninth with 10 points.
